A study of the functional analytic properties of Weyl transforms as bounded linear operators on $ L2ü(äBbb Rünü) $ in terms of the symbols of the transforms. Further, the boundedness, the compactness, the spectrum and the functional calculus of the Weyl transform are proved in detail, while new results and techniques on the boundedness and compactness of the Weyl transforms in terms of the symbols in $ Lrü(äBbb Rü2nü) $ and in terms of the Wigner transforms of Hermite functions are given. The roles of the Heisenberg group and the symplectic group in the study of the structure of the Weyl transform are explained, and the connections of the Weyl transform with quantization are highlighted throughout the book. Localisation operators, first studied as filters in signal analysis, are shown to be Weyl transforms with symbols expressed in terms of the admissible wavelets of the localisation operators. The results and methods mean this book is of interest to graduates and mathematicians working in Fourier analysis, operator theory, pseudo-differential operators and mathematical physics.

Pseudo-differential operators were initiated by Kohn, Nirenberg and Hörmander in the sixties of the last century. Beside applications in the general theory of partial differential equations, they have their roots also in the study of quantization first envisaged by Hermann Weyl thirty years earlier. Thanks to the understanding of the connections of wavelets with other branches of mathematical analysis, quantum physics and engineering, such operators have been used under different names as mathematical models in signal analysis since the last decade of the last century. The volume investigates the mathematics of quantization and signals in the context of pseudo-differential operators, Weyl transforms, Daubechies operators, Wick quantization and time-frequency localization operators. Applications to quantization, signal analysis and the modern theory of PDE are highlighted.
This book provides an in-depth and rigorous study of the Wigner transform and its variants. They are presented first within a context of a general mathematical framework, and then through applications to quantum mechanics. The Wigner transform was introduced by Eugene Wigner in 1932 as a probability quasi-distribution which allows expression of quantum mechanical expectation values in the same form as the averages of classical statistical mechanics. It is also used in signal processing as a transform in time-frequency analysis, closely related to the windowed Gabor transform.Written for advanced-level students and professors in mathematics and mathematical physics, it is designed as a complete textbook course providing analysis on the most important research on the subject to date. WAVELETS AND RENORMALIZATION describes the role played by wavelets in Euclidean field theory and classical statistical mechanics. The author begins with a stream-lined introduction to quantum field theory from a rather basic point of view. Functional integrals for imaginary-time-ordered expectations are introduced early and naturally, while the connection with the statistical mechanics of classical spin systems is introduced in a later chapter.A vastly simplified (wavelet) version of the celebrated Glimm-Jaffe construction of the Φ43 quantum field theory is presented. It is due to Battle and Federbush, and it bases an inductively defined cluster expansion on a wavelet decomposition of the Euclidean quantum field. The presentation is reserved for the last chapter, while the more basic aspects of cluster expansions are reviewed in the chapter on classical spin systems.Wavelets themselves are studied from two different points of view arising from two disciplines. The mathematical point of view covers the basic properties of wavelets and methods for constructing well-known wavelets such as Meyer wavelets, Daubechies wavelets, etc. The physical point of view covers the renormalization group formalism, where there is a close connection between wavelets and Gaussian fixed points.The book is heavily mathematical, but avoids the theorem-proof-theorem-proof format in the interests of preserving the flow of the discussion — i.e., it is written in the style of an old-fashioned theoretical physics book, but the major claims are rigorously proven. The minor themes of the book are reflection positivity, the combinatorics of cluster expansions, and the issue of phase transitions — themes which have nothing to do with wavelets, but which provide necessary cultural background for the physical context.
Historical interest and studies of Weyl's role in the interplay between 20th-century mathematics, physics and philosophy have been increasing since the middle 1980s, triggered by different activities at the occasion of the centenary of his birth in 1985, and are far from being exhausted. The present book takes Weyl's "Raum - Zeit - Materie" (Space - Time - Matter) as center of concentration and starting field for a broader look at his work.
