A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC's reports. Subjects covered in this file include the results of Allied bombing raids in Europe; Allied strategy in South East Asia; the possibility of an internal German collapse, and the Allied response to this; enemy sabotage in Britain and the Mediterranean; preparations for Operation Overlord, including calculations of probable enemy resistance, deception and distraction arrangements, and the possibility of the Germans using chemical weapons; post-war Soviet foreign policy and relations with Britain; Allied cypher security; support for European anti-Nazi resistance movements; and Axis military strength and casualties.
