This document containing the FAO’s Voluntary Guidelines on agro-environmental policies is mainly directed at people in charge of making and implementing policies on agriculture, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture in Latin America and the Caribbean. The guidelines are the result of an extensive consultation process and debates carried out through the project “Strengthening Agro-environmental policies in Latin America and the Caribbean Through Dialogue and Exchange of National Experien ces,” implemented by Brazil between 2012 and 2015 in the framework of South- South Cooperation, with the collaboration of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Nicaragua in the first stage, and Costa Rica, Cuba, Panama and Paraguay in the second stage.
This publication aims to commemorate the partnership between the Government of Brazil and FAO within the scope of the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation Program in LAC, focusing on the main actors of the Government of Brazil (Ministry) and partner countries. FAO and other stakeholders in this initiative. It will highlight the main milestones of this innovative cooperation between Brazil and FAO, with the main results of the projects that were and are part of the history of cooperation. It will be written jointly between the technical area of FAO and the government of Brazil (Brazilian Cooperation Agency), to highlight the importance of this alliance in the Triangular (or trilateral) South-South cooperation modality where FAO and Brazil build and execute projects of means constant technical assistance, with reference to Brazilian public policies.
Campesino a Campesino tells the inspiring story of a true grassroots movement: poor peasant farmers teaching one another how to protect their environment while still earning a living. The Gender Strategy proposes to deepen the analysis of the initiatives that achieve changes and - structural transformations - of the unequal relations, emphasizing in the monitoring of the SDGs and the indicators under the mandate of the FAO. Furthermore, the strategy must respond to the challenges of the current context, some of which are in the order of the slowdown in economic growth, the increase in poverty and hunger, demographic changes and in the composition and structure of families and the exhaustion of the current development model, characterized by the increase of inequalities and environmental crises.
The International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science, and Technology for Development (IAASTD) looks realistically at how we could effectively use agriculture/AKST to help us meet development and sustainability goals. An unprecedented three-year collaborative effort, the IAASTD involved more than 400 authors in 110 countries and cost more than $11 million. It reports on the advances and setbacks of the past fifty years and offers options for the next fifty years. The results of the project are contained in seven reports: a Global Report, five regional Sub-Global Assessments, and a Synthesis Report. The Global Report gives the key findings of the Assessment, and the five Sub-Global Assessments address regional challenges. The volumes present options for action. All of the reports have been extensively peer-reviewed by governments and experts and all have been approved by a panel of participating governments. The Sub-Global Assessments all utilize a similar and consistent framework: examining and reporting on the impacts of AKST on hunger, poverty, nutrition, human health, and environmental/social sustainability. The five Sub-Global Assessments cover the following regions: Central and West Asia and North Africa (CWANA) East and South Asia and the Pacific (ESAP) Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) North America and Europe (NAE) Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)

Food systems around the world face a triple challenge: providing food security and nutrition for a growing global population; supporting livelihoods for those working along the food supply chain; and contributing to environmental sustainability. Better policies hold tremendous promise for making progress in these domains.
This book examines the global campaign to end hunger and malnutrition. Focus is placed on the work of the United Nations which has led international efforts to improve food security in the world’s poorest countries. The book first reviews the long-term project to establish access to safe, sufficient, and nutritious food as a universally recognized human right. This is followed by separate chapters that examine the nature and central causes of food insecurity in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. These chapters also review the contemporary work of three United Nations agencies – the World Food Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization, and International Fund for Agricultural Development – in providing both food aid and food assistance to each region of the developing world. This includes the provision of emergency food aid in response to natural disaster and civil conflict, as well as longer-term food assistance to promote agricultural productivity, advance rural development, and preserve natural environments. The concluding chapter considers ways to strengthen food aid and assistance in the years to come, with many of the recommendations advanced reflecting lessons learned from the actual experience of food aid and assistance described in this book.
Law and Employment analyzes the effects of regulation and deregulation on Latin American labor markets and presents empirically grounded studies of the costs of regulation. Numerous labor regulations that were introduced or reformed in Latin America in the past thirty years have had important economic consequences. Nobel Prize-winning economist James J. Heckman and Carmen Pagés document the behavior of firms attempting to stay in business and be competitive while facing the high costs of complying with these labor laws. They challenge the prevailing view that labor market regulations affect only the distribution of labor incomes and have little or no impact on efficiency or the performance of labor markets. Using new micro-evidence, this volume shows that labor regulations reduce labor market turnover rates and flexibility, promote inequality, and discriminate against marginal workers.
