Index of all items recorded in will books created by a Virginia county or city during the period 1800-1865. Compiled from microfilm records in the Library of Virginia, and organized by geographic region.
This work is a faithful transcription of the oldest surviving court records for Lower Norfolk County. Virtually all of the entries have the virtue of placing one or more settlers in Lower Norfolk County early in the 17th century.
The original records on file in Isle of Wight County and abstracted in this work are: Wills and Administrations Book A (1641-1650); Will and Deed Books 1 and 2 (1658-1659, 1666-1719); Will Books 3-11 (1726-1800); Deed Book I (1691-1695); Administrations and Probates (1666-1701); and The Great Book (1719-1729). In addition to the names of the testators and legatees, the entries provide the names of executors, securities, and witnesses and frequently include assignments of property.
In the preparation of his opus, the author had occasion to interview many survivors of the original settlers of Sumner County.Cisco's opus emphasizes the founder and foundation of Sumner County, and, in fact, the work is substantially genealogical in content. The first fifty pages of the volume move rapidly over such topics as early exploration of the county, local topography, territorial laws and officials, early land owners, and, of course, Sumner County in the wars, particularly the Civil War. Thereafter, the work focuses on Sumner County pioneers and their families in a series of genealogical and biographical sketches of varying lengths, some of them illustrated.
By: Dorothy F. Wulfeck, Pub. 1965, Reprinted 2018, 198 pages, Index, soft cover, ISBN #0-89308-791-2. Culpeper was created in 1749 from Orange county which in turn was created from Spotsylvania which was created from Essex. This volume includes the abstracts of Wills from 1770-1791 and the index for book "G" 1813-1817. Book "G" is lost so the index to the original book will help place an individual in the county at a given time frame. The reader will also discover abstracts of Old Miscellaneous Papers 1827-1870 which were discovered in the Clerk's office. Also included are Court Suits from 1815-1839, along with some Tombstone Inscriptions.
An index to wills, inventories, appraisements, land grants and surveys to 1850.
