Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was an Anglican priest, hagiographer, antiquarian, novelist and eclectic scholar whose published works number in the region of 1,250. His Lives of the Saints ran to 16 volumes, published from 1872-77, and in addition he produced this work on female saints which is reprinted from the fully-illustrated American edition of 1901.
This is a collection of tales of saintly women and begins with the life of Blandina, the slave girl of Lyons, whose terrible death as a Christian martyr in the second century harrows the soul, and ends with that nineteenth century martyr to duty, Dorothy Pattisou, known as "Sister Dora." There are eighteen sketches in the book, which, of course, does not include all the virgin saints and martyrs, but simply those whose lives make romantic and graphic stories. With sixteen full-page Illustrations by F. Anger.

Excerpt from Virgin Saints and Martyrs Lyons is a city that has at all times summed in it the finest as well as the worst characteristic of the Gallic people. The rabble of Lyons were ferocious in 177, and ferocious again in 1793; but at each epoch, during the Pagan terror and the Democratic terror, it produced heroes of faith and endurance.
