The Routledge Handbook of Childhood Studies and Global Development explores how global development agendas and processes of economic development influence children’s lives. It demonstrates that children are not only the frequent targets or objects of development but that they also shape and influence processes of economic, political and sociocultural development. The handbook makes the case for the importance of placing children at the heart of development debates and demonstrates how researchers, policymakers and practitioners can engage children in development. Through reports on field research as well as a critical engagement with theories in development studies and childhood studies, contributors contest normative assumptions about childhood and global development. They tease out and tease apart the complex social, historical, cultural, economic, epidemiological, ecological, geopolitical, and institutional processes transforming what it means to be young in the world today. Showcasing research from both established scholars and early career researchers, and with particular prominence given to the work of authors from the global south, this book will be an essential reference for policymakers, practitioners, and for researchers and students across childhood studies, education, geography, sociology, and global development.
This book explores the situation of violence against children (VAC) in the Caribbean context against an international backdrop. It examines the different dimensions of violence (direct, cultural and structural) and involves a sociological exploration of the factors that contribute to the high tolerance of violence that exists in the Caribbean region, with particular attention to Trinidad and Tobago. A deconstruction of the violence concept and its epistemological implications allows for a defining, refining, and re-defining of the phenomenon. The research examines the spheres of domestic violence, gender violence, violence against street children, and corporal punishment in great detail. The research adopts a rights-based analysis of the issue of VAC and incorporates an international review. It imports field research from Bangladesh, Canada, Nicaragua, and the Netherlands to inform the study. It conducts an evaluation of Trinidad and Tobago's standing with respect to the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and puts forward sound recommendations for change. The multi-design approach uses qualitative and quantitative data analysis to assess the nation's knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs on the issue of VAC. The ultimate aim of the research is for its utilization by everyone, especially state policy makers, to promote a 'lowering' of the threshold of violence-tolerance, thereby fostering a more child-friendly society. Child Abuse as a social problem in the Caribbean has only within the past thirty years gained recognition and attention since the emphasis was placed on the more prevalent maternal and child health problems. The phenomenon of child abuse and neglect, however, is not clearly defined due to inadequate surveillance systems within the territories. Studies based on reported cases have established that there are traditional child rearing practices which adversely affect some Caribbean children due to many factors ranging from poverty, inequality, oppression, gender issues, socio-economic disadvantages and loss of values. Because of these deficiencies, various forms of child abuse have been identified particularly in the urban areas which may be considered the outcome of abnormalities in the parent /child relationship and of the society. The Book presents a comprehensive portrayal of the phenomenon of child abuse and neglect in Caribbean society drawing on research and clinical experience. It incorporates history, case scenarios and a variety of effective intervention strategies. In addition, it explains case management procedures focusing on how various professions can become involved in the child protection process; and the need to convey in a different light the changes that need to occur to break the cycle of child abuse and neglect. The Book is written for professionals who work in the best interest of children on a daily basis and intended to offer a good basic introduction to the topic. It is a useful tool for therapists, educators, students, social workers, nurses, police officers. It is intended to stimulate those who read it not only to improve their day-to-day practice in responding to child abuse but will also broaden their perspective about child abuse and neglect. The Book also explains how the needs of children and the relationship between them and their parents are predictive of child abuse and neglect; and examines its nature, causes, recognition and response, its effects on children, the legislation and the social and other obstacles to effective implementation of the Law. The author draws attention to the fact that the majority of this study focuses primarily on people of African descent since little is known about children in other ethnic groups.
