Villiers De L'isle Adam was one of the greatest symbolist writers of the 19th century. His works, in the Romantic style, are often fantastic in plot and filled with mystery and horror. Originally published in 1886, 'The Future Eve' is a stunning work, noted for popularizing the term 'android'. Many of the horror stories of monsters and ghouls, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Villiers de l'Isle-Adam (1838-1889), though best known for his contes cruels and his proto science fiction novel L'Ève future, began his career with two volumes of verse, Deux essais de poésie (1858) and Premières poésies (1859), the contents of which are here presented in their entirety as Complete Early Poetry, translated for the first time into English, by Richard Robinson. Under the spell of Baudelaire and Leconte de Lisle, the young author produced these early exemplars of Decadent verse, which are filled with exoticism, nocturnal fantasies, and mystery. Complete Early Poetry offers further insight into one of the most interesting and eccentric of the French Symbolists.

The Comte de Villiers de l'Isle Adam (1838-1889), pioneer of the Symbolist Movement, is known for his proto-science fiction works Axel (1885) and L'Eve Future (1886). He also wrote many "cruel tales", only a handful of which have ever been translated before this publication of The Scaffold. Poet Paul Verlaine called Villiers' works a "genial melange of irony, metaphysics and terror"and translator Brian Stableford dubs it "a bizarre literary landmark." Brian Stableford has published more than fifty novels and two hundred short stories. This book is the first English-language edition, and includes an authoritative introduction and historical notes.
Family Secrets and the Psychoanalysis of Narrative is the first book to explore the implications of the psychoanalytic theory of the phantom for the study of narrative literature. A phantom is formed when a shameful, unspeakable secret is unwittingly transmitted, through cryptic language and behavior, transgenerationally from one family member to another. The "haunted" individual to whom the "encrypted" secret is communicated becomes the unwitting medium for someone else's voice--and the result is speech and conduct that appear incongruous or obsessive in a variety of ways. Through close readings of texts by Conrad, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Balzac, James, and Poe, Esther Rashkin reveals how shameful secrets, concealed within the unspoken family histories of fictive characters, can be reconstructed from their linguistic traces and can be shown not only to drive the characters' speech and behavior but also to generate their narratives. First articulated by the French psychoanalysts Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok, the theory of the phantom here represents a radical departure from Freudian, Lacanian, and other psychoanalytic approaches to literary interpretation.
