Originally published in 1984, this collection of 14 short stories set in Arkansas and Mississippi went on to win that year’s National Book Award for fiction, confirming Ellen Gilchrist’s place as one of the preeminent literary talents of her generation. Victory Over Japan takes us into the lives of an unforgettable group of Southern women — beautiful, complicated, enchanting, and sometimes dangerous — in and out of bars, marriages, divorces, lovers' arms, and even earthquakes, in an attempt to find happiness, or at least some satisfaction. Throughout these stories, one hears echoes of Flannery O'Connor and Eudora Welty, but Ms. Gilchrist has her own unique literary voice, and it is outrageously funny, moving, tragic, and always appealing. PRAISE: “To say that Ellen Gilchrist can write is to say that Placido Domingo can sing. All you need to do is listen.” —Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post “She is what they call a natural, writing with passion, authority and a noticeable lack of the self-consciousness that weighs down much of contemporary fiction.” —San Francisco Examiner-Chronicle “Ellen Gilchrist’s achievement is to create lives which refuse to be bound on the page by words and sentences . . . the writing is full of understanding that doesn’t advertise itself as perception or insight.” —London Daily Telegraph
This is a book of elegant photographs by award-winning photographer Art Myers of women following treatment for breast cancer. Scars and missing breasts are openly revealed in an artistic way. The pictures are accompanied by vignettes written by each woman relating a short story of her journey through the breast cancer experience. Original poems by Maria Marrocchino are paired with some of the photos and the book has a poignant foreword by Dr. David Spiegel, author of Living Beyond Limits. The photographs include women in the United States as well as in France and the narratives written by the French women are presented in both French and English. Two women, well-known in the breast cancer support communities, Dani Grady in the US and Annick Parent from France, have written introductions.

She competed in Ball Room Dancing and won several competitions over her career. Then one day she was diagnosed with cancer. At this point in her life she thought her entire world was falling apart. However, she was determined to defeat this dreaded disease. Her book My Journey A Victory Over Cancer Through Alternative Methods is a book that Valarie wrote that outlines how she beat cancer. In her book she provides all of the information that she learned through two years of research so that she could help other people in their battle against cancer without going through the trauma of traditional cancer treatments. Her book is uplifting, inspiring, and motivational. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry but most of all it will help you to defeat one of the most dreaded diseases in the world, the disease that we call cancer.
A decade ago Leaf, a cancer survivor himself, began to investigate why we had made such limited progress fighting this terrifying disease. The result is a gripping narrative that reveals why the public's immense investment in research has been badly misspent, why scientists seldom collaborate and share their data, why new drugs are so expensive yet routinely fail, and why our best hope for progress-- brilliant young scientists-- are now abandoning the search for a cure.
Uses the author's experience with cancer in order to encourage others to stay positive while battling the disease, with anecdotes from other survivors and advice on handling such issues as the diagnosis, relationships, exercise, and caregiving.
In I've Been Diagnosed, Now What? Courageously Fighting Cancer in the Face of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt Ms. Nolen, a seven-year survivor of Stage 3 Inflammatory Breast Cancer, shares her journey from uninformed patient to self-advocate. After coming to grips with the diagnosis, she made a conscious decision to get the best treatment available and to bring together the best support team possible. She used a variety of methods, including internet research, word of mouth, and joining support groups to learn how to build a strong medical team and surround herself with a support structure of her family, friends, and social media communities. Now having passed the critical five-year survival mark, Ms. Nolen is sharing her strategies with other survivors who may be feeling isolated and uncertain. With inspiring stories from other survivors, resource lists for every stage of the process, and survivor secrets she learned along the way, readers will be able to build their own community of support and not just survive, but thrive!
The Resurrection accounts of Jesus in the Gospels are the most dramatic and impactful stories ever told. One similarity unites each testimony--that none of his most loyal and steadfast followers could "see" it was him, back from the dead. The reason for this is at the very foundation of the Christian faith. She turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. (John 20:14) Hope in the Time of Fear is a book that unlocks the meaning of Jesus's resurrection for readers. Easter is considered the most solemn and important holiday for Christians. It is a time of spiritual rebirth and a time of celebrating the physical rebirth of Jesus after three days in the tomb. For his devoted followers, nothing could prepare them for the moment they met the resurrected Jesus. Each failed to recognize him. All of them physically saw him and yet did not spiritually truly see him. It was only when Jesus reached out and invited them to see who he truly was that their eyes were open. Here the central message of the Christian faith is revealed in a way only Timothy Keller could do it--filled with unshakable belief, piercing insight, and a profound new way to look at a story you think you know. After reading this book, the true meaning of Easter will no longer be unseen.
