The objective of this book is to present a fundamental development of the science and engineering underlying the design of exhaust aftertreatment systems for automotive internal combustion engines. No pre-requisite knowledge of the field is required: our objective is to acquaint the reader, whom we expect to be new to the field of emissions control, with the underlying principles, control methods, common problems, and fuel effects on catalytic exhaust aftertreatment devices. We do this in hope that they can better understand the previous and current generations of emissions control, and improve upon them. This book is designed for the engineer, researcher, designer, student, or any combination of those, who is concerned with the control of automotive exhaust emissions. It includes discussion of theory and fundamentals applicable to hardware development.
Airbus S.A.S., a European aircraft manufacturer, is introducing a new aircraft designated as the A380, which is expected to enter service in late 2007. The A380 will be the largest passenger aircraft in the world, with a wingspan of 262¿, a tail fin reaching 80¿ high, & a maximum takeoff weight of 1.2 million pounds. The A380 has a double deck & could seat up to 853 passengers. This report discusses: (1) the safety issues associated with introducing the A380 at U.S. airports; (2) the potential impact of A380 operations on the capacity of U.S. airports; & (3) how selected foreign airports are preparing to accommodate the A380. The author conducted site visits to the 18 U.S. airports & 11 Asian, Canadian, & European airports preparing to receive the A380. Ill.
In India, vehicle emission standards were implemented in 1991 for gasoline vehicles and in 1992 for diesel vehicles. Since 2000, Euro standards have been followed in India under the name Bharat Stage Emission Standards for four-wheeled vehicles. Since October 2010, Bharat Stage III norms have been implemented throughout India. Bharat Stage IV norms have been in effect in a few cities since April 2010. Bharat Stage IV is expected to be implemented throughout India by April 2017. It is already in use in 13 major cities. Upgrading the emission standards necessitates the upgrading of manufacturing companies' technology, which raises the cost of the vehicle. One of the main reasons for the slow upgrade of emission standards is cost. However, there are some who argue that the cost increase is offset by cost savings in health care because the pollutants that cause disease are reduced as emission standards are raised. Fuels are also important in meeting these emission standards. Fuel specifications have also been aligned with the corresponding European production norms.
