El objetivo del estudio es el de evaluar el estado nutricional en un colectivo representativo de la población adolescente residente en algeciras (Cádiz) mediante indicadores antropométricos, de impedancia bioeléctrica, dietéticos y de práctica deportiva. El estudio se ha realizado con una muestra de 1025 personas con edades comprendidas entre los 12 a los 19 años ambos inclusive (481 hombres y 544 mujeres). Se ha estudiado lo siguiente: - Los parámetros de composición corporal en los dos compartimentos principales, masa grasa y masa libre de grasa mediante antropometría e impedancia bioeléctrica. - La ingesta de energía y nutrientes. - Incidencia de obesidad. - La práctica deportiva y su relación con la composición corporal y con la ingesta de nutrientes. Se han obtenido las siguientes conclusiones: - El porcentaje de adolescentes con sobrepeso y obesidad en nuestro estudio es inferior al de otros países desarrollados. En nuestro estudio el porcentaje de las adolescentes con sobrepeso y obesidad es superior al de los varones. - El IMC tiene una alta correlación no solo con la masa grasa sino también con la masa libre de grasa en adolescentes. - Los datos de composición corporal obtenidos por antropometría e imedancia bioeléctrica presentan altos coeficientes de correlación entre si pero su concordancia es baja. - El porcentaje de masa grasa es menor en los que practican deporte y tiene relación con el número de horas de práctica. - Los adolescentes que practican deporte presentan porcentaje de obesidad notablemente inferiores con respecto a los sedentarios. - La ingesta de la población estudiada se caracteriza por una ingesta media de kilocalorías ligeramente superior a las recomendadas, con una cantidad elevada de grasa, proteínas y colesterol y baja de hidratos de carbono. Si bien el porcentaje de grasa es elevado, su calidad se aproxima a los objetivos nutricionales de nuestro País.

Food choices and eating habits are learned from many sources. The school environment plays a significant role in teaching and modeling health behaviors. For some children, foods consumed at school can provide a major portion of their daily nutrient intake. Foods and beverages consumed at school can come from two major sources: (1) Federally funded programs that include the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), the School Breakfast Program (SBP), and after-school snacks and (2) competitive sources that include vending machines, "a la carte" sales in the school cafeteria, or school stores and snack bars. Foods and beverages sold at school outside of the federally reimbursable school nutrition programs are referred to as “competitive foods” because they compete with the traditional school lunch as a nutrition source. There are important concerns about the contribution of nutrients and total calories from competitive foods to the daily diets of school-age children and adolescents.
