Sometimes in our lives, we suffer heartaches and pains. Sometimes we suffer them alone. The characters are real, and the events are true. The burdens these characters carry are heavy. Walk with me down this lonely road and know there is a way out of a negative situation. Hope, sacrifice, and love is what these characters need. Hope, sacrifice, and love is what these characters could have if they want it. I wanted a way out of my negative lifestyle, so I decided to put my experiences on paper rather than continue to live them on the streets. I pray this anthology of street poetry pierce the suffering heart, devour the lonely soul, and vanish our bad habits. Only then have I done what God has called me to do. An entertaining and wonderfully interesting magical book about a very mysterious British poet, known by the name of 'Jedi, The Urban Poet'. Who is he? Where does he come from? What has he got to say about life? When I was approached to do this book, as an author I felt privileged to publish Jedi's poems and reveal a small hint of his story, but I am still no wiser to who he is or where he really comes from, or where he is going next. All I know is Jedi the Urban Poet appears like a ship out of the fog and disappears like a shadow when the sun goes back in behind a cloud. He is a protester of lost causes and a friend of the underdog. The last words he said to me before he said goodbye were, "I' a citizen of nowhere but always homesick for somewhere." Street Matters links urban policy and planning with street protests in Brazil. It begins with the 2013 demonstrations that ostensibly began over public transportation fare increases but quickly grew to address larger questions of inequality. This inequality is physically manifested across Brazil, most visibly in its sprawling urban favelas. The authors propose an understanding of the social and spatial dynamics at play that is based on property, labor, and security. They stitch together the history of plans for urban space with the popular protests that Brazilians organized to fight for property and land. They embed the history of civil society within the history of urban planning and its institutionalization to show how urban and regional planning played a key role in the management of the social conflicts surrounding land ownership. If urban and regional planning at times benefited the expansion of civil rights, it also often worked on behalf of class exploitation, deepening spatial inequalities and conflicts embedded in different city spaces.
Maryann Corbett’s Street View is a panorama of views: suburban and urban avenues, shown in leaf and in snow; alleyways where misfits lurk in darkness, but also where “Adonis, charioteer of municipal waste collection, rides with the morning”; and boulevards of old buildings whose elegance remains undeniable, even when “prinked in the clown suit of commerce.” Street View also navigates the resiliency and failings of the human body, and the memories of family and pivotal acquaintances that shape viewpoints for good or ill. This is the work of a seasoned poet in command of her craft, and deservedly, a finalist for the 2016 Able Muse Book Award.
