The University of Central Florida has stood at the edges of Orlando for 40 years, a major institution of research, culture, education, and professional development stitched into the fabric of one of the nation's most dynamic and influential metropolitan areas. Conceived in 1963, at the height of America's fascination with the space program and less than an hour from Florida's Space Coast, the school began as Florida Technological University, a vast and remote tract of wild palmettos and swampland that held the promise of a cutting-edge "Space University." But 1963 was the same year that Walt Disney made his fateful fly over Central Florida and chose the location for Walt Disney World, a decision that would ultimately transform the entire region. This re-issue of the classic 1927 documentary edition by historian Ulrich Bonnell Phillips and his doctoral student, James David Glunt, features a new introduction by John David Smith about its publishing history, its editors, and its scholarly value to southern historiography. Originally published by the Missouri Historical Society, it documents the plantation records of George Noble Jones and his two Florida plantations, El Destino and Chemonie, both located near Tallahassee, Florida. Considered one of the most accurate and comprehensive accounts of plantation management ever published, it remains one of the best primary source documents on plantation overseers and management. Phillips was the leading American slavery historian in the early 20th century; Glunt went on to become a history professor at the University of Florida. "Most of the writings here published are from the pens of men of little schooling," Phillips and Glunt explain; ". . . these plantation overseers presumably could not have written in better form than they did. And yet the editors have a duty to make the text reasonably easy to read." Principally covering the middle years of the 19th century, Florida Plantation Records provides a rich array of details essential to understanding slavery and plantation life in Florida--from slave names, ages, and work loads, to medical bills and weather reports, to production records, slave family genealogical information, and post-Civil War tenant agreements. In addition to defining the historical value of the primary text, Smith's introduction evaluates the work of the editors within the context of 1920s editorial practice and historiography. Phillips held a proslavery, paternalistic view of African Americans--a bias shared by most leading historians and social scientists of the pre-civil rights era. But as Smith shows, Phillips' views did not undermine his role as a groundbreaking researcher who held himself and his contemporaries to the highest standards. Renowned for his determination and success in locating and preserving plantation manuscripts, Phillips was among the first historians to base their work on "scientific" methods. His significant publications helped to establish American slavery as a sub-field of southern history. This important volume--still relevant to scholars today--will be welcomed by historians of slavery, African American studies, the Old South, Florida, U.S. economics, and the Reconstruction era, as well as students, teachers, and libraries.
The unique early path of public higher education in Florida In this book, Carl Van Ness describes the remarkable formative years of higher education in Florida, comparing the trajectory to that of other states and putting it in context within the broader history and culture of the South. Central to this story is the Buckman Act of 1905, a state law that consolidated government support to three institutions and prompted decades of conflicts over where Florida’s public colleges and universities would be located, who would head them, and who would manage their affairs. Van Ness traces the development of the schools that later became the University of Florida, Florida State University, and Florida A&M University. He describes little-known events such as the decision to move the University of Florida from its original location in Lake City, as well as a dramatic student rebellion at Florida A&M University in response to attempts to restrict Black students to vocational education and the subsequent firing of the president in 1923. The book also reflects on the debates regarding Florida’s normal schools, which provided coursework and practical training to teachers, a majority of whom were women. Utilizing rare historical records, Van Ness brings to light events in Florida’s history that have not been examined and that continue to affect higher education in the state today.
After the Florida State Legislature passed an act calling for the creation of two seminaries of learning in 1851, West Florida Seminary was established in Tallahassee. In the 1880s, the seminary's curriculum was reorganized along the lines of a conventional four-year college, and in 1901, the name was changed to Florida State College, better suiting its well-rounded liberal arts education and the traditional college experience offered to its students. With the passage of the Buckman Act in 1905, the school began a new chapter as the Florida Female College. After the name was changed to Florida State College for Women in 1909, it went on to rank as one of the premier women's colleges in the country. In 1947, in part to accommodate the influx of returning GIs, the school resumed its coeducational status as Florida State University. Combining traditional strength in the arts and humanities with recognized leadership in the sciences, Florida State University is one of the country's foremost research institutions today.
