Unity and Obedient Discipleship in the Gospel of John is an in-depth study companion to The Ultimate Victory: Becoming a Follower of Jesus, chapter 5. It can also be read as a stand alone exegetical study of John 17:20-23. Keep in mind that it is easy to read into the Bible what is already part of a person’s experiences and understanding of the world around them. But, in reality, in order to understand Scripture properly, one should first understand how a passage would have been understood by its original audiences and then considered regarding contemporary application. The Gospel of John was written for a first-century Mediterranean world and this book looks at the Gospel of John from this perspective. It is my prayer that many will read this book with its focus on John and in particular John 17:20-23 in order to understand more fully how John’s “Good News” proclamation would have been initially understood in the first-century Mediterranean world, and thereby gain a clearer perspective on the heart of God’s Gospel message, which will in-turn stimulate many to seek that which God desires for all of His obedient children: a vibrant life now as part of His eternal close-knit holy family and eternal perfection in the near future within His holy family within the renewed heavens and earth. In addition, I pray that after working through this in-depth study, if you have not considered the historical-cultural and literary context along with the grammar of passages in the past, you will do so in the future as you continue to study and grow in God’s Word. Ultimately, I pray that this book will stimulate many to seek God’s enlightenment and empowerment in order to realize more fully His desired godly unity for His obedient children among all of the universal Church. Let’s all work together more fully in the coming years helping many come to know God and His ways more fully, which will in-turn help those who listen realize God’s more abundant life. Why closing the back door of your church is even more important than opening the front door wider. In Sticky Church, author and pastor Larry Osborne offers a time-tested strategy for doing so: sermon-based small groups that dig deeper into the weekend message and tightly velcro members to the ministry. It's a strategy that enabled Osborne's congregation to grow from a handful of people to one of the larger churches in the nation—without any marketing or special programming. Sticky Church tells the inspiring story of North Coast Church's phenomenal growth and offers practical tips for launching your own sermon-based small group ministry. Topics include: Why stickiness is so important Why most of our discipleship models don't work very well Why small groups always make a church more honest and transparent What makes groups grow deeper and sticker over time Sticky Church is an ideal book for church leaders who want to start or retool their small group ministry—and velcro their congregation to the Bible and each other.

Using the method of literary critical analysis to read the Johannine narrative, Marianus Pale Hera underlines the profound relationship between the Johannine Christology and the Gospel's teaching on discipleship. A narrative reading of selected passages from chapters 1-12 of John (the prologue, Jesus' first disciples, the first sign at Cana, the man born blind, and the I Am sayings) indicates John's tendency to present christological teaching that leads to teaching on discipleship. The reading of these passages also identifies the elements that indicate the christological character of Johannine discipleship. The author's exegesis of John 17 confirms that John's teaching on Christology and discipleship are intimately interrelated to each other. All the elements that indicate the christological character of discipleship are on display in John 17. The author concludes that Christology, which is the center and heartbeat of John's thought, is not an end in itself but leads to discipleship. The twofold message of Christology and discipleship is a distinctive Johannine trait.
