For electrical engineers, considers the creation and maintenance of a power supply that will not cause the loss of data or damage to sensitive equipment (particularly computers) by taking a break or getting sloppy for a second or two. Authors from manufacturers, equipment designers, and user companies overview the subject, describe the equipment and systems used, cite applications in air transport and telecommunications, and discuss the more technical topics of harmonic distortion, reliability, and the specification of equipment. As industry power demands become increasingly sensitive, power quality distortion becomes a critical issue. The recent increase in nonlinear loads drawing non-sinusoidal currents has seen the introduction of various tools to manage the clean delivery of power. Power demands of medical facilities, data storage and information systems, emergency equipment, etc. require uninterrupted, high quality power. Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and active filters provide this delivery. The first to treat these power management tools together in a comprehensive discussion, Uninterruptible Power Supplies and Active Filters compares the similarities of UPS, active filters, and unified power quality conditioners. The book features a description of low-cost and reduced-parts configurations presented for the first time in any publication, along with a presentation of advanced digital controllers. These configurations are vital as industries seek to reduce the cost of power management in their operations. As this field of power management technology continues to grow, industry and academia will come to rely upon the comprehensive treatment found within this book. Industrial engineers in power quality, circuits and devices, and aerospace engineers as well as graduate students will find this a complete and insightful resource for studying and applying the tools of this rapidly developing field.

Not an engineer, but need to know the basics of battery backup power? UPS Handbook breaks down the complex world of Uninterruptible Power Supply systems into simple-to-understand language. If you need to know the basics of UPS systems but not the expertise of how to repair them, this book is for you. ?What is an Uninterruptible Power Supply system? ?How do they work??Which is right for you? ?What is a UPS topology? ?What maintenance is needed??What is the most preventable failure??Batteries: what are they, and why are they important??What are the advantages of modularity? The author answers these questions and more in UPS Handbook, a Layman's Guide to UPS Systems.Learn from others in case studies highlighting the problems they experienced and how to prevent them from happening to you. After finishing this helpful resource, you will not only have the knowledge to make informed decisions about your backup power system, but you will speak the language of electricians, engineers, and technicians.
Because society depends greatly on electric energy, power system control and protection focuses on ensuring a secure and reliable supply of power. To operate the electric systems in safe mode, the power system component should be equipped with intelligent controllers. The Handbook of Research on Smart Power System Operation and Control is a collection of innovative research on the theoretical and practical developments in smart power system operation and control that takes into account both smart grid and micro-grid systems. While highlighting topics including cybersecurity, smart grid, and wide area monitoring, this book is ideally designed for researchers, students, and industry professionals.
This handbook serves as a guide to deploying battery energy storage technologies, specifically for distributed energy resources and flexibility resources. Battery energy storage technology is the most promising, rapidly developed technology as it provides higher efficiency and ease of control. With energy transition through decarbonization and decentralization, energy storage plays a significant role to enhance grid efficiency by alleviating volatility from demand and supply. Energy storage also contributes to the grid integration of renewable energy and promotion of microgrid.
Building on solid state device and electromagnetic contributions to the series, this text book introduces modern power electronics, that is the application of semiconductor devices to the control and conversion of electrical power. The increased availability of solid state power switches has created a very rapid expansion in applications, from the relatively low power control of domestic equipment, to high power control of industrial processes and very high power control along transmission lines. This text provides a comprehensive introduction to the entire range of devices and examines their applications, assuming only the minimum mathematical and electronic background. It covers a full year's course in power electronics. Numerous exercises, worked examples and self assessments are included to facilitate self study and distance learning.
This book presents a new topology of the non-isolated online uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system consisting of 3 components: bridgeless boost rectifier, battery charger/discharger, and an inverter. The online UPS system is considered to be the most preferable UPS due to its high level of power quality and proven reliability against all types of line disturbances and power outages. The new battery charger/discharger reduces the battery bank voltage, which improves performance and reliability, while a new control method for the inverter regulates the output voltage for both linear and nonlinear loads. The proposed USP system shows an efficiency of 94% during battery mode and 92% during the normal mode of operation.
Grid converters are the key player in renewable energy integration. The high penetration of renewable energy systems is calling for new more stringent grid requirements. As a consequence, the grid converters should be able to exhibit advanced functions like: dynamic control of active and reactive power, operation within a wide range of voltage and frequency, voltage ride-through capability, reactive current injection during faults, grid services support. This book explains the topologies, modulation and control of grid converters for both photovoltaic and wind power applications. In addition to power electronics, this book focuses on the specific applications in photovoltaic wind power systems where grid condition is an essential factor. With a review of the most recent grid requirements for photovoltaic and wind power systems, the book discusses these other relevant issues: modern grid inverter topologies for photovoltaic and wind turbines islanding detection methods for photovoltaic systems synchronization techniques based on second order generalized integrators (SOGI) advanced synchronization techniques with robust operation under grid unbalance condition grid filter design and active damping techniques power control under grid fault conditions, considering both positive and negative sequences Grid Converters for Photovoltaic and Wind Power Systems is intended as a coursebook for graduated students with a background in electrical engineering and also for professionals in the evolving renewable energy industry. For people from academia interested in adopting the course, a set of slides is available for download from the website. www.wiley.com/go/grid_converters
