TRB Special Report 234 - Data for Decisions: Requirements for National Transportation Policy Making examines data requirements necessary to support strategic transportation policy making and the institutional changes necessary to make those data available on a permanent basis. The report calls for the establishment of a statistical agency within USDOT (this recommendation became helped create the Bureau of Transportation Statistics), the development of performance indicators, and regular reporting to the Secretary and Congress on important trends in system performance.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently undertaking a broad program known as Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) to develop, introduce, and certify new technologies into the National Airspace System. NextGen is a fundamentally transformative change that is being implemented incrementally over a period of many years. Currently, the FAA is putting into place the foundation that provides support for the future building blocks of a fully operational NextGen. NextGen is a challenging undertaking that includes ground systems, avionics installed in a wide range of aircraft, and procedures to take advantage of the new technology. Transformation in the Air assesses the FAA's plan for research on methods and procedures to improve both confidence in and the timeliness of certification of new technologies for their introduction into the National Airspace System. This report makes recommendations to include both ground and air elements and document the plan's relationship to the other activities and procedures required for certification and implementation into the National Airspace System.
The 12th International Workshop on Future Aviation Activities was conducted by the Transportation Research Board on September 1820, 2002, at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. This workshop, the most recent in a biennial series that was initiated in 1979, was carried out with support from the Federal Aviation Administration to provide input to public- and private-sector managers and decision makers on forecasting long-term trends and developments in commercial, business, and personal air transport. Focus was on the post-September 11 environment. Topics discussed include the domestic and international macroeconomic outlook; the structure and operating patterns of major and regional American air carriers; expected developments in international aviation, air cargo issues, aircraft, and engine manufacture; trends in business aviation, including fractional ownership; civil helicopter transport services; and the improving future for personally owned and operated light aircraft.
