Mao Tse-tung has dominated the Chinese domestic scene for well over four decades now. Ever since the 1935 Tsunyi Conference, he has been successful in asserting his leadership over the Chinese Communist Party and the People's Liberation Army-the two main loci of power within China. However, in the process, Mao has had to face many a challenge to his authority. At times, it appeared as if the reins of control over the Party and the PLA were slipping out of his hands and that. the country was relapsing into a period of warlordism, or head-ing towards army dictatorship or rule by a Party hierarchy, not loyal to Mao and his dogma. But Chairman Mao has somehow managed to retain his supremacy over the major components of the Chinese political system by deposing or liquidating all those who dared usurp his throne. Mao's successors are unlikely to have either the charismatic personality or the stature of the great helmsman. Therefore, what follows after Mao is a matter of great significance and acute concern for both the Chinese people and the world at large.
The Biographic Dictionary of Chinese Communism, first published in 1970, provides biographies of 433 influential figures of the Chinese Communist Party in the years from 1921 to 1965. Each biography contains all information then available on the person's family, education, socio-economic status, early revolutionary activity, and career after the Communists came to power in 1949, as well as the dates and purposes of all foreign trips, information about important writings, and involvement in all kinds of Party activities.
"This bibliography is a companion piece to the microfilm project of same title (on 28 reels) which contains the full text of the titles listed in the bibliography. The translations were performed by linguists under contract with the United States Joint Publications Research Service (JPRS), a federal agency established in 1957 to service the translation needs of various government research units. Materials to be translated are selected by Government scientists and researchers under contract. The majority of JPRS translations are in the social sciences. The focus is on economic, political and social developments in the communist world and in other foreign areas. Upon the initiative of the Social Science Research Council a group of sixty subscribing universities began to receive the JPRS translations on China in July-August 1960. The translations issued before this date were, however, not included in this or in any other subscription-distribution program. Since that material is of equal importance for studies on China, the present microfilm project of the JPRS reports included in this bibliography intends to fill this gap in the China field in providing these translations for the researcher."--Foreword
