Environmental Hydraulics includes about 200 contributions from 35 countries presented at the 6th International Symposium on Environmental Hydraulics (Athens, Greece, 23-25 June 2010). They cover the state-of-the-art on a broad range of topics, including: fundamentals aspects of environmental fluid mechanics; environmental hydraulics problems of inland, coastal and ground waters; interfacial processes; computational, experimental and field measurement techniques; ecological aspects, and effects of global climate change. The concept of “environmental security” has emerged as one basis for understanding international conflicts. This phrase can mean a variety of things. It can signify security issues stemming from environmental concerns or conflicting needs, or it can mean that the environment is treated as a resource for the long term, and the question is what should be done today to preserve the quality of the environment in the future. In the same way that energy security is about ensuring access to energy for the long run, it can also mean that pressing environmental concerns create a situation where different countries and communities are forced to collaboratively design a unified response, even if cooperation is not generally in the logic of their relations. River basin management is a key concept in contemporary water policy. Since the management of rivers is best designed and implemented at the scale of the river basin, it seems obvious that we should not confine ourselves to administrative or geographical borders. In other words, river basin management implies crossing borders. Experience with river policies shows that this is easier said than done, though.
