Information is presented on the traffic-control measures being used by states and local agencies to enhance pedestrian safety. Approximately 15 to 20 percent of all highway fatalities are pedestrians, and although most pedestrian accidents occur in urban areas, all agencies should pay more attention to the needs of pedestrians. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes and discusses more than 20 traffic-control measures and their effects on pedestrian safety, including the advantages and disadvantages of each and the conditions under which each is most and least likely to be of benefit.
This report deals with pavement mixture designs and construction operation of field trials on U.S. 69 north of Lufkin, Texas. The binders used in this field trial consisted of pure asphalt cement for the control sections and 30/70 weight percent of a sulphur/asphalt emulsion as the test binder. All elements of the structural (thickness) design were produced in pairs for comparison purposes with the exception of two thinner sections selected to possibly show distress in two or three years. Otherwise, the thickness designs used in the test sections were those specified by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation in the conventional section of this highway. Preconstruction laboratory evaluations of mixture properties and field laboratory control measurements are included as a part of this report.
This manual presents procedures and guidelines applicable to the use of the cone penetration test. It represents the author's interpretation of the state-of-the-art in Dutch static cone testing as of February 1977. Its contents should provide assistance and uniformity to engineers concerned with the interpretation of the data obtained from such testing. Only geotechnical engineers familiar with the fundamentals of soil mechanics and foundation engineering should use this manual.
