Excerpt from Toxic Chemicals in Fish and Wildlife at Big Bend National Park, Texas Eight sediment and 37 tissue samples (listed in Appendix 1) were collected by the author from two Rio Grande sites (figure The site referred to as Castolon in the text and as cas in Appendix 1 is a stretch of the river from Santa Elena Canyon to Castolon on the western side of Big Bend National Park. The site referred to as Solis in the text and sol in Appendix 1 is a stretch of river from Solis to Casa de Piedra in the eastern part of the park. The Solis site is about 88 river kilometers downstream from Castolon and is just downstream of Mariscal Canyon. Like Santa Elena Canyon, Mariscal Canyon provides habitat for peregrine falcons. Collections from Santa Elena Canyon to Castolon were made on April 17 and 18, 1986. Collections from Solis to Casa de Piedra were made on April 20 and 21, 1986. The river sections were floated with inflatable boats and stops were made to collect sediments and fish and wildlife at favorable locations along the way.
