The Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT) of the U. S. Department of Energy commissioned the National Research Council (NRC) to undertake a study on required technologies for the Mining Industries of the Future Program to complement information provided to the program by the National Mining Association. Subsequently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health also became a sponsor of this study, and the Statement of Task was expanded to include health and safety. The overall objectives of this study are: (a) to review available information on the U.S. mining industry; (b) to identify critical research and development needs related to the exploration, mining, and processing of coal, minerals, and metals; and (c) to examine the federal contribution to research and development in mining processes.
This book describes the phases for innovative metallurgical process development, from concept to commercialization. Key features of the book include: • Need for process innovation • Selection and optimization of process steps • Determination of the commercial feasibility of a process including engineering and equipment selection • Determination of the environmental footprint of a process • Case-study examples of innovative process development
Metallurgy as a branch of materials science and engineering refers to the study of metallic elements, intermetallic compounds and alloys. The most important technique used to extract metals is mining. Therefore, metallurgy and mining are important to various industries. This book will talk about the various metals and their mining techniques and their importance in the industrial sector. The various advancements in mining and metallurgy are glanced at and their applications as well as ramifications are looked at in detail in this text. This book elucidates the concepts and innovative models around prospective developments with respect to these fields. While understanding the long terms perspective of the topics, the book makes an effort in highlighting their impact as a modern tool for the growth in mining and metallurgy. Students, researchers, experts and all associated with this subject will benefit alike from the book.
Automation in Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing covers the proceedings of the Third International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) symposium. The book discusses techniques and methods of automatic control and of system analysis for use in mining, mineral, and metal processing industries. Comprised of 69 chapters, the text presents theories, applications, operations, and maintenance of automation systems in an industrial environment. The topics covered are also relevant in solving various issues in the mining, mineral, and metal processing industries, such as pollution, safety, energy efficiency, human resource, and materials through the implementation of an unmanned system. This book will be of great interest to professionals especially those who are contemplating the use of automated system.
