James Tobin was born in 1758 in County Tipperary, Ireland. He married Catherine LaShore in 1780 (d. 1781) in New York and they had one daughter. He married Ann Kirkes Spangenburg (1766-1824), daughter of Thomas Kirkes and Ann Abel and widow of Frederick Henry Spangenburg, in 1787 in Digby, in Nova Scotia. They had nine children. He died in 1826.
History of the Tobey, Toby, Tobin families. In New Jersey the family last name was Tobey or Toby. The first time the last name of Tobin was used was in 1789 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey by Nathaniel Tobin (between 1740 and 1750-1831 or 1832), who prior to this signed his name as Nathaniel Tobey.
Tobin is a six-year-old orphan who yearns for a family. He finds a black walnut tree to be his friend. He calls the tree Mr. Good Tree. But one day Tobin discovers that Mr. Good Tree is going to be chopped down. Mr. Good Tree whispers something in Tobins ear. Sobbing mightily, he is too devastated to hear. Anger unites with grief. Night is approaching, but he runs off into the forest alone where a scary, exhausting, and disappointing adventure begins. The adventure leads to Tobin unraveling that whispering voice and to a loving family and God.
