But their inherited culture was altered, challenged, and reshaped by Native American and Hispanic peoples, and a new, vibrant cultural life resulted. From Houston to Los Angeles, from Tulsa to Tucson, Keith L. Bryant traces the development of "high culture" in the Southwest. Humans create culture, but in the Southwest, Bryant argues, the land itself has also influenced that creation. This book explores the most recent critical and theoretical approaches in the field of Chicano studies from an interdisciplinary perspective. The contributions go back to the 4th International Conference on Chicano Literature which took place in Sevilla in May 2004. They deal with a wide variety of topics and approach the subject from diverse viewpoints.
