This fifth volume of the collected letters of poet, playwright, essayist, and literary critic Thomas Stearns Eliot covers the years 1930 through 1931. It was during this period that the acclaimed American-born writer earnestly embraced his newly avowed Anglo-Catholic faith, a decision that earned him the antagonism of friends like Virginia Woolf and Herbert Read. Also evidenced in these correspondences is Eliot’s growing estrangement from his wife Vivien, with the writer’s newfound dedication to the Anglican Church exacerbating the unhappiness of an already tormented union. Yet despite his personal trials, this period was one of great literary activity for Eliot. In 1930 he composed the poems Ash-Wednesday and Marina, and published Coriolan and a translation of Saint-John Perse’s Anabase the following year. In this book Larry Harwood situates and evaluates Bertrand Russell’s thought on religion within the context of Russell’s biography. His well-known animus toward religious belief is highlighted and maintained without neglecting his quieter and comparatively unknown quest for something religious. The book argues that while Russell’s critique of religious belief is not unlike that of other thinkers, his superlative prose, extraordinary skill with words, and candor gave him an advantage and audiences beyond competing secular thinkers. Harwood argues that among secularists few have been as vehemently critical of religious belief and believers as Russell, while even fewer have displayed his appetite for some religious truth. The author presses these two antipodes in Russell’s mind to provide a holistic picture of the life and thought of arguably the greatest philosopher of the twentieth century. By the conclusion of this study, the reader has witnessed Russell as not only a petulant and abiding critic of religious belief, but also as a thinker who has “carried the burden of God.”
Criticism of Eliot has ignored the public dimension of his life and work. His poetry is often seen as the private record of an internal spiritual struggle. In Genders, Races and Religious Cultures in Modern American Poetries, Rachel Blau Duplessis shows how, through poetic language, modernist writers represented the debates and ideologies concerning New Woman, New Negro and New Jew in the early twentieth century. From the poetic text emerge such social issues of modernity as debates on suffrage, sexuality, manhood, and African-American and Jewish subjectivities. By a reading method she calls 'social philology' - a form of close reading inflected with the approaches of cultural studies - Duplessis engages with the work of such canonical poets as Wallace Stevens, Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, Marianne Moore and H. D., as well as Mina Loy, Countee Cullen, Alfred Kreymborg and Langston Hughes, writers, she claims, still marginalized by existing constructions of modernism. This book is an ambitious attempt to remap our understanding of modern poetries and poetics, and the relationship between early twentieth-century writing and society.
