Personal religious narratives, either as therapeutic testimonies or as prophetic visions, have played an essential role in shaping the liturgy of the early Pentecostal movement. The present publication takes as its aim to study these oral narratives in the light of religious, literary and social theories, in order to establish what relevance they have with regard to the secularization of Christianity. The theses put forward are thought to be a contribution to narrative theory and practice. To theory formation, because they advocate a bilingualism in which religious and secular speech become part of the same metaphor. To religious practice, because they encourage communication in which the claims of the individual, society, and the Holy can be understood and answered responsibly.
This book explores the ordinary beliefs and practices of Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians in relation to the Holy Spirit. It does this by means of a congregational study of a classical Pentecostal church in the UK, using participant observation, focus groups and documentary and media analysis. This approach develops a framework in which the narratives of informants can be interpreted. Focusing on specific areas of interest, such as worship, conversion, healing and witness, each contribution from respondents is situated within the context of the congregation and interpreted by means of the broader Christian tradition. This book makes a unique contribution to scholarship by offering a rich and varied picture of contemporary Christians in the Pentecostal and Charismatic traditions, enabling a greater understanding to be appreciated for both academic and ecclesial audiences.

Grounded in anthropological comparison and the concept of materiality, this book offers an in-depth ethnographic study of the similarities and differences among various forms of religious practices in a Pentecostal Church (Christ Embassy) and an Islamic group (NASFAT) in the Nigerian capital of Abuja. Scholarship in this area tends to focus on inter-religious contestations and conflicts; however, this book proposes that another dynamic is unfolding between Christians and Muslims that is characterised by conviviality, interfaith joint action programmes, mutual influences and even the exchange of religious forms.
