Excerpt from Outlines of Theoretical Chemistry The author has gladly availed himself of the opportunity, afforded by the demand for a third edition of his Outlines of Theoretical Chemistry, to subject the entire text to a thorough revision. This undertaking has involved the rewriting of large portions of the preceding edition, the introduction Of much new material based upon recent advances in the science Of physical chemistry, and such changes in the arrangement of the various chapters as the logical presentation of the subject demands. The criticisms and suggestions which have been offered by a number of teachers, who have used the former editions of the book with their classes, have proven most helpful in the arduous task of revision. Textbook on modern theoretical chemistry suitable for advanced undergraduate or graduate students.
Excerpt from Lectures on Theoretical and Physical Chemistry, Vol. 1: Chemical Dynamics The following work reproduces the lectures given by me at the University of Berlin, under the title of 'Selected Chapters in Physical Chemistry.' It really includes somewhat more, for in the strictly limited time it was only possible to pick out certain leading points, in order to cover the whole subject, in one-hour lectures, through the course of four semesters. So this little book may perhaps be a welcome guide to those who wish to possess themselves of the latest acquisitions of physical chemistry. Excerpt from Inorganic Chemistry: With the Elements of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry In Part I is found a general introduction to chemistry and a logical division of the subject into its principal branches. In Part II is given such an outline of physical chemistry as is necessary to the full understanding and appreciation of the de scriptive portion of the work. In Part III theoretical chemistry is treated With more than the usual fullness. The student cannot too soon become acquainted With this branch of the subject nor study it too much. It contains the very heart of chemistry, and a knowledge of it is absolutely necessary to the intelligent study of the elements and their com pounds. Excerpt from Lectures on Theoretical and Physical Chemistry, Vol. 3: Relations Between Properties and Compositions To these I have added a third section, in which the chief object is the comparison of one substance with another, and consequently the relations between properties - both chemical and physical - and composition. Excerpt from Lectures on Theoretical and Physical Chemistry, Vol. 2: Chemical Statics Taking 2 kilograms of hydrogen as basis for calculating this value of R, we have for atmospheric pressure and 0 C. Excerpt from Text-Book of Physical Chemistry Excepting the chapter on Phases, this book represents what I have been in the habit of teaching the Senior Class in the Chemical Course at Rutgers College. I find lectures very unsatisfactory. The subject needs much thought, and the student does not seem able to get the proper material for this from notes, unless the lectures are made mere dictations. Besides, Physical Chemistry has attained such development that it is well to put a certain part of it in permanent text book form now, for whatsoever changes in our views time may bring, certain ideas we now have will not change. These fundamental ideas I have tried to put into this little book. Of course, I have also included some theories and ideas that later on may have to be rejected. That cannot be helped. Excerpt from A d104-Book of Physical Chemistry Theory and Practice It is probable that the majority of students will have had already a few of the more distinctly physical experiments. Much of the general information regarding units, etc., in the Introduction and in the first part of several chapters is also probably familiar to some, but is included for completeness and for reference. Physical Chemistry apparatus which is understood with difficulty or the description of which is instructive, is described under the appropriate topic in the body of the book. All other apparatus, methods, etc., are described in the Intro duction. The Introduction also contains references to all the apparatus considered elsewhere, together with mathematical data, discussion of errors, etc., so that the book constitutes a complete manual for all ordinary work in Physical Chemistry.
