This beautiful character piece in D-flat Major was written in 1903 but is still an excellent example of 19th Century romanticism, with rolling right hand chordal accompaniment over a cello-like "expressivo" melody. The composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was not bereft of early advocates, from Schumann, Liszt, and Mahler to Sir George Grove.
