Excerpt from The Wallet of Time, Containing Personal, Biographical, and Critical Reminiscence of the American Theatre, Vol. 1 It occurred to me early in life that a comprehensive and minute History of the Theatre in America, showing the action and reaction of Society and the Stage and making the great actors live again, could he made a work of peculiar interest and value, and I entertained the purpose of writing it: but I soon perceived that such a History could be prepared and published only by a person possessed not only of the necessary knowledge and enthusiasm but of ample wealth and leisure, and my ambitious purpose was abandoned. I have, however, ventured to believe that my various writings about the Stage might be made usefully contributive to the general store of theatrical information. There are persons, considerable in number, to whom writings about the Theatre seem superfluous, but when it is considered that an immense space is devoted to such writings in almost every nontechnical publication of the day, and that such writings are welcomed with eager interest by millions of readers, the conclusion is irresistible that a deep and general interest exists in that institution. Thoughtful contributions to theatrical history and commentary, therefore, should not he deemed worthless. This work offers a comprehensive glance at dramatic affairs in America within the period of about the last sixty years. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
