This book is one of the first research studies on Western Rite Orthodox communities of Oriental Orthodox Churches, with emphasis and special reference to the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch and the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church. Two Western Rites, the Independent Catholic Church of Ceylon, Goa and India and the Christian (Old Orthodox) Catholic Rite Church of America was constituted with the blessings and permission of Moran Mor Ignatius Peter IV (III) - Patriarch of Antioch and All East. These communities came into existence as a result of the great missionary vision of Patriarch Ignatius Peter IV (III) and the Prelates of Malankara. The book is a journey through the great missionary efforts of Patriarch Ignatius Peter IV (III), Malankara Metropolitan Pulikkottil Mar Joseph Dionysius II, Metropolitan Alvares Mar Julius, Archbishop Rene Vilatte Mar Timotheus I, Dr. Lisboa Pinto, St. Gregorious of Parumala and other great leaders of Syriac and Malankara Churches.
The aim of this book is to demonstrate the presence in the very ancient Eastern Churches of religious images of all kinds (icons, paintings, illuminations), including the representation of Christ, together with the veneration (not the adoration) of icons/images. Presented here are not only the iconographic but also the liturgical-and especially the Christological-dimensions of the icon on the basis of texts used by these four traditions down the centuries. In contrast to the Byzantine Orthodox world which, after a controversy on this subject, officially established the veneration of icons from the time of the Second Council of Nicaea (787) and in 843, these Churches did not experience Iconoclasm. Christine Chaillot is Swiss and Orthodox (Patriarchate of Constantinople). She has published several books on the Orthodox Churches and the Oriental Orthodox Churches. (Series: Studies on Oriental Orthodox Church History / Studien zur Orientalischen Kirchengeschichte, Vol. 55) [Subject: Religious Studies, Christian Studies, History, Iconography]
The Bible in the Armenian Tradition provides a concise historical account of the development of the Bible in Armenia and the illustrative traditions that are represented in surviving codices. The author focuses on the origins of the first translations of the Bible into Armenian in the fourth century, which inspired the Armenian alphabet itself. A range of beautiful Armenian Bible manuscripts from collections throughout the world are illustrated in full color and compared with western Bible illuminations. Later printed Armenian Bibles are also examined in detail, revealing fascinating examples of religious differences between the Armenian and the Catholic Christian traditions. This survey of Armenian Bible history is an important reference for biblical scholars and anyone with an interest in the history of Christianity.

It explores questions relating to the significance of being human, Eve's curse, sexed bodies, the place of Mary, the nature of priesthood, the role of the deacon, and the task of being a priest in the twenty-first century. The reflections move across three main areas of discussion: issues of theological anthropology, particular questions pertaining to the priesthood and the diaconate, and contemporary practices. In each area the implications for ordaining women in the Orthodox Church today are explored.
Chiefly interested in the early modern period, 1517-1798.
This book is about the liturgy of the Malankara and Syriac Orthodox Churches of India and the Middle East, for children ages 4 – 8 and even older. It is quite natural for children to be curious about and fascinated by the sights, sounds and fragrances they encounter in the Holy Temple during the Holy Qurbono. It is intended to help children learn some of the more common words and names of items that are used in the Liturgy, in English, in Malayalam (the language of Syrian Christians in India), and in Aramaic Syriac (the language of Jesus). My First Holy Qurbono Words is a little book with words that even a young child can quickly learn, and one that may be brought to church every Sunday to help children experience and understand the Liturgy while it is being celebrated.
