An eloquent and thought-provoking book on racism and prejudice by the Liverpool and England football legend John Barnes. John Barnes spent the first dozen years of his life in Jamaica before moving to the UK with his family in 1975. Six years later he was a professional footballer, distinguishing himself for Watford, Liverpool and England, and in the process becoming this country's most prominent black player. Barnes is now an articulate and captivating social commentator on a broad range of issues, and in The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism he tackles head-on the issues surrounding prejudice with his trademark intelligence and authority. By vividly evoking his personal experiences, and holding a mirror to this country's past, present and future, Barnes provides a powerful and moving testimony. The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism will help to inform and advance the global conversation around society's ongoing battle with the awful stain of prejudice.
SOCIOLOGY: FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS. NO MORE GAMES. IT'S TIME FOR THE TRUTH. Neil Strauss made a name for himself advocating freedom, sex and opportunity as the author of The Game. Then he met the woman who forced him to question everything. Neil's search for answers took him from Viagra-laden free-love orgies to sex addiction clinics, from cutting-edge science labs to modern-day harems, and, most terrifying of all, to his own mother. What he discovered changed everything he knew about love, sex, relationships and, ultimately, himself. The Truth may have the same effect on you.
Gayton McKenzie tackles the tough subject of his experiences with love, sex and relationships, admitting the truth derived from his own life as a "player", in the hope that the women who read it will feel more equipped to deal with the search for the right kind of man.
Telling the truth versus a comfortable lie has always been my motto. The uncomfortable truth is that, even though I'm a human being, a believer in God, I'm still a black man in America. The rulers of this world have indoctrinated us all with types of lies, starting with the knowledge of our true heritage. For 400 years, the experience of black and brown people in America has been less than a joy ride. Have you ever taken the time to research why? Well, I have, and the findings contained herein are rather disturbing. Well documented facts have been ignored by the world at large but to my dismay even in the church. Consequently, we are now witnessing many societal ills such as the deterioration and feminization of our black youth via music, television, and social media. Additionally, decision-makers have weaponized new terms such as toxic masculinity to further emasculate us. Often, using celebrities along with sports figures to negatively influence our children into becoming followers on a quest for fame and fortune, not seekers of God. This book is admittedly bold, a bit controversial to some and that's ok. Sometimes you have to stir the pot to get much-needed conversations going on in the church and the world at large. In this book, I'm raising the bar from your typical sugarcoated "Christian" literature you may be used to. Today, everyone is overly concerned with being politically correct even as a believer. This is not the time to be passive when lives are being snatched away in the black community daily. Someone has to tell it like it is, I believe I was chosen to be that voice. To hear some scholars say it "black people were never of any significance to God." Even though the origin of mankind and several scriptures state otherwise. Yet people wonder why some black people are not open to receiving the "Good News." To me, the answer is simple if you can't relate, you can't participate. The days of the smooth-talking, self-serving charismatic feel-good messages are over! We are truly living in the last days and since God said He would rather none be lost, this is my contribution to that cause. In addition to exposing some uncomfortable truths, this book is filled with solutions. I've used portions of my life as an example to illustrate that even when others doubt your calling, God will not pass you by. With that in mind, I've included tips, tricks, and techniques to help you eliminate self-defeating thoughts that hinder your progress. The purpose of this book is not to give you a reason to give up but a reason to get up! Despite the obstacles you've faced, we serve a mighty God who can and will tip the scales in your favor so you too can be a winner! Remember being pro-black does equate to being anti-white. God is not the author of confusion, and He loves all His children, but I want this world to know He has always loved us just the same.
Does your church make you uncomfortable? It’s easy to dream about the “perfect” church—a church that sings just the right songs set to just the right music before the pastor preaches just the right sermon to a room filled with just the right mix of people who happen to agree with you on just about everything. Chances are your church doesn’t quite look like that. But what if instead of searching for a church that makes us comfortable, we learned to love our church, even when it’s challenging? What if some of the discomfort that we often experience is actually good for us? This book is a call to embrace the uncomfortable aspects of Christian community, whether that means believing difficult truths, pursuing difficult holiness, or loving difficult people—all for the sake of the gospel, God’s glory, and our joy.
How much do we really know about the species that make up the natural world? All over the world, biodiversity is gravely threatened – by overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution and climate change. Yet life on Earth has previously experienced five episodes of mass extinction, and nature has repeatedly proved itself to be a resilient, regenerative force. In this fascinating book, ecologist Dr. Ken Thompson surveys the Earth's biodiversity, its origins and some of the threats it currently faces. Thought-provoking and deeply engaging, Do We Need Pandas? offers a non-technical overview of our ecosystems and expands on the causes and consequences of biodiversity loss. Importantly, it also examines what we should be doing to secure the survival not only of the species with which we share the planet, but of ourselves – and whether we need to be more concerned about ecosystems as a whole than about iconic species such as the orangutan and giant Panda.
Exposes the uncomfortable truth about the nature of sin and how its crafty characteristics often seep into the cracks of our lives when we least expect it, discussing how the sins of pride, envy, anger, slothfulness, greed, gluttony, and lust have masked themselves in today's technology and culture. When a parent singles out a child for special privileges and attention, that child is often unaware that the relationship is unhealthy—even incestuous. As adults, these children struggle to feel validated, because while they have not been directly abused, they feel a sense of violation and crossed boundaries—usually done in the name of 'love' and 'caring.' The parent's love feels more confining than freeing, more demanding than giving, more intrusive than nurturing. Yet these children suffer from what psychologist Kenneth Adams calls The Silent Seduction—because there is nothing loving or caring about a close parent-child relationship that services the needs of the parent rather than the child. In this revised and updated 20th anniversary edition of his groundbreaking book Silently Seduced, Dr. Adams explains how 'feeling close,' especially with the opposite-sex parent, is not the source of comfort the image suggests, especially when that child is cheated out of a childhood by being a parent's surrogate partner. He offers a framework to understand this covert incest and its effect on sexuality, intimacy, and relationships, and how victims can begin the process of recovery.

He's also one of the most scathingly humorous athletes on the planet, and he wants to make you uncomfortable. Following in the footsteps of activist-athletes from Muhammad Ali to Colin Kaepernick, Bennett demonstrates his outspoken leadership both on and off the field.Written with award-winning sportswriter and author Dave Zirin, Things that Make White People Uncomfortable is a sports book for our turbulent times, a memoir, and a manifesto as hilarious and engaging as it is illuminating.
