Copy of The Ulster County Gazette and its illegitimate offspring by R. W. G. Vail, printed by the New York Public Library, 1930.
The Ulster county gazette, published in Kingston, New York, by Samuel Freer and Son, was a weekly publication supporting the Federalist Party. The issue for January 4, 1800, reporting news of the death of George Washington, is widely reproduced and forged. 64 variations are documented in The Ulster county gazette and its illegitimate offspring by R.W.G. Vail. This collection includes ten specimens, acquired by the library at various times. These include copies of Vail I (either 1, 2, or 3), tentatively dated around 1848-1850; copies of Vail VII, no. 22 and 23; copies of Vail VIII, no. 28 and 30; a copy of Vail XIX (no. 57 or 58); and four specimens not recorded in Vail.
Reports the discovery, in the Library of Congress, of an original copy of vol. 2, no. 88 (4 Jan. 1800) of the Ulster county gazette, previously known only by way of numerous facsimile reprints. The issue was valued for its report on the funeral and other events following the death of George Washington.
