In a famous speech made to Western ambassadors at a reception in the Polish Embassy in Moscow in 1956, Nikita Khrushchev, Premier of Russia, said, "We will bury you." Many leaders in the West took this as a literal threat against the power of the West. In 1959 Khrushchev visited the US and was asked about the statement. He stated he was not referring to a literal burial, but that through inexorable historical development communism would replace capitalism and "bury" it.
