Excerpt from The True Grandeur of Nations: An Oration, by Charles Sumner, Delivered Before the Authorities of the City of Boston, July 4, 1845 In obedience to an uninterrupted usage of our community, we have all, on this Sabbath of the Na tion, put aside the common cares of life, and seized a respite from the never-ending toils of labor, to meet in gladness and congratulation, mindful Of the blessings transmitted from the Past, mindful also, I trust, of the duties to the Present and the Future. May he Who now addresses you be en abled so to direct your minds, that you shall not seem to have lost a day! Excerpt from The True Grandeur of Nations: An Oration Delivered Before the Authorities of the City of Boston, July 4, 1845 Honor to the memory Of our fathers! May the turf lie lightly on their sacred graves! Not in words only, but in deeds also, let us testify our reverence for their name, imitating what in them was lofty, pure, and good, learning from them to bear hardship and priva tion. May we, who now reap in strength what they sowed in weakness, augment the inheritance we have received! TO this end, we mu st not fold our hands in slumber, nor abide content with the past. TO each generation is appointed its peculiar task; nor does the heart which responds to the call Of duty find rest ex cept in the grave. Excerpt from Addresses on War Charles sumner began his public life by what he himself called a declaration of war against war. His great oration in Tremont Temple on The True Grandeur of Nations marked, his biographer rightly Observes, the most important epoch in Sumner's life. Had he died before this event, his memory would have been only a tradition with the few early friends who survive him. The 4th of July, 1845, gave him a national, and more than a national, fame. Epoch making in Sumner's own life, we think it may be safely said that no oration which he ever gave has greater intrinsic importance, and perhaps no other will be read so long. Of all pleas made by Ameri can men for the rule of peace on earth, it is the noblest and the most comprehensive, save Sumner's own later address on The War System of Nations. There is almost no argument against war which these orations and their successor do not somehow make use of; and the advocate of peace in all the years returns to them, and returns again, for support and inspiration. The bringing together in a single volume, as is now done for the first time, of all of Sumner's three great addresses on war and peace is a distinct public service; and every philanthropist and every true philo-american will wish the volume the widest currency and influence. Excerpt from Memoir and Letters of Charles Sumner, Vol. 1 I bequeath to Henry W. Longfellow, Francis V. Balch, and Edward L. Pierce, as trustees, all my papers, manuscripts, and letter-books, to do with them what they think best with power to destroy them, to deposit them in some public library, or to make extracts from them for publication. With the facilities afforded by this trust. And the aid of Mr. Sumner's early friends, who have kindly contributed their recollections of him and such letters as they had preserved, the biographer has prepared two volumes of his Memoir and Letters for the period closing with the Oration on The True Grandeur of Nations, July 4, 1845, which is the first production included in the edition of his Works as revised by himself, and marks the beginning of.
