The aim of this convention is to open up the markets on both sides. This includes eliminating tariffs and other trade barriers between the two unions, the United States and the European Union. Furthermore, restrictions for commercial services shall also be reduced, security of investment and the competitive equality shall be improved, and not least the access to public contracts shall be simplified at all levels of government. Therefore, the TTIP is a unique joint project which can obtain considerable growth and em-ployment effects (Bundesministerium fur Wirtschaft und Umwelt 2015). However, there is a lot of criticism and concerns regarding foreign trade between the European Union and the United States, but there are a lot of advantages for both countries as well. Some of the topics are highly controversial mainly due to differing standards and norms of both partners (Beck & Ohr 2014)."

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,2, course: International Organizations in the Global Political Economy, language: English, abstract: This paper introduces the transatlantic trade and investment partnership (TTIP) which is a free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States. Negotiations on an historic trade deal between the European Union and the United States are losing momentum and must be revived. The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP, is the most ambitious trade and investment pact ever attempted and an opportunity to revitalise the relationship between Europe and the US. As the EU and US combined account for nearly half of world GDP, the potential gains from such a deal could be substantial - as much as £100bn a year to the EU and £80bn to the US according to some estimates. While getting rid of the remaining tariffs on transatlantic trade is important, some 80 per cent of the potential gains will be derived from the removal of non-tariff barriers, a point of particular significance for SMEs. A successful TTIP will be of benefit to the rest of the world by stimulating world trade in general and encouraging progress on other multilateral trade initiatives, including encouraging China's participation. TTIP should also not be a closed shop and that there should be provision to allow third countries to participate. But without more political impetus from Washington and the big EU member states and without a concerted campaign to make the public in all the countries involved more aware of the potential benefits, the opportunity could be lost. If that happens the EU and the US are unlikely to be in the same position of influence in the world economy next time around
On July 8, 2013, the United States and the European Union launched talks for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, a proposed international investment agreement. This agreement would create the world's largest free trade area and cover almost half of the entire global economic output. Other research has concluded that increasingly global trade has led to an increase in investment disputes between foreign investors and host nations and stressed the importance of investor-state dispute settlement provisions. Within an international investment agreement, investor-state dispute settlements provide investors a means of holding foreign states accountable to an international tribunal with repercussions of a binding, enforceable award of compensation.Even with a recognized public backlash, U.S. and EU leaders have publicly stated their intention of including investor-state dispute settlement provisions in the finalized TTIP and future international investment agreements, including any future multilateral agreement on investment. A U.S. Model text includes three significant changes that will impact the adoption of investor-state dispute settlement provisions in the bilateral investment treaty: transparency; third-party involvement; and consideration for future multilateral appellate procedures. The EU Draft text and corresponding negotiating directive address the following issues: transparency, tribunal creation, enforcement of arbitration awards and potential future appellate mechanisms. This Comment provides original analysis on specific provisions regarding each of these issues and seeks to prescribe reconciliation between the U.S. and EU texts. I find that reconciliation is possible on all ISDS provisions of the proposed TTIP. Then, I conclude with a summarization of all relevant discussions.
Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - Region: USA, grade: 1,0, Norwich University (College of Liberal Arts), course: International Security Policy, language: English, abstract: The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) which is intensely discussed in the media as well political and economic interest groups and political parties seems to have the potential to become “the largest bilateral trade and investment negotiation ever undertaken” between two major politico-economic blocks, namely the United States of America and the European Union. Its presumable effects will not only be visible on the economic level, but also profoundly affect judicial, political, social , and security issues. Due to the financial and Euro zone crises, the pact is about to be reshuffled, politico-economical powers have to be balanced anew and governments look for innovative and sustainable ways to reinvigorate their economies to position their industries and enterprises in the most competitive way on a global level. In this paper, the question of to what extent will potential effects of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) Program affect (1) U.S. and (2) European Security Policy attitudes will be answered and the ways to get to this answer will be explained. This paper does not intend to promote or reject the TTIP initiative in a biased way, but to factually show potential positive and negative effects it would have and to what extent it would affect the United States and the European Union.
The United States and the European Union have agreed to negotiate a free-trade accord which would bring both sides of the Transatlantic community much closer, economically but also politically. The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is expected to act as a job creation and prosperity engine, say its proponents. Are there any negative side effects? Experts and policymakers weigh in. (These analyses were originally presented as expert testimony before Congress)
The European Union and the US are currently negotiating the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), with potentially enormous economic gains for both partners. Experts from the European Union and the US explore not only the groundwork laid for TTIP under the "New Transatlanticism," but also the key variables – economic, cultural, institutional, and political – shaping transatlantic policy outcomes. Divided into four parts, Part I, consisting of three chapters, contextualizes the transatlantic relationship with an historical survey, contemporary foreign relations and policy, and cultural dynamics. Together, these chapters provide the background for understanding the evolving nature of the EU–US relationship. Part II of this volume focuses on governance and comprises two chapters – one on transatlantic governance and the other administrative culture. Part III consists of six policy chapters: competition, trade, transport, mobility regimes, financial services regulation, and GMOs. Part IV, consisting of three chapters, explores prospects and challenges associated with transatlanticism, including the TTIP. The last chapter concludes with lessons learned and future challenges with respect to policy convergence; the nature of the EU–US relationship; power, resources, and bargaining within the transatlantic partnership; and, an assessment of the future of deeper cooperation and integration. This insightful account into policy cooperation between the EU and the US is a welcomed resource for policy specialists oriented toward comparative public policy wishing to enter the arena of Transatlantic Studies.
"This volume studies the plan of the TTIP in depth and points out the impact on other regions of the world. It also discusses similar alliances made by the two partners."--Page 4 of cover.
