Excerpt from The Tenth Muse, and Other Poems In stately classic time Who built the lofty rhyme - While yet his hand wandered along the lyre, While the loud prelude lingered, And each quick string he fingered, Not finding fitting outburst of his fire - Then would he raise First notes of prayer and praise To those great daughters of Mnemosyne - The high immortal Nine - And, swift! the whispered line Leapt to his lip, - commanding, sounding, free. Excerpt from The Tenth Muse It is plain enough that he loved country things, for a dozen books show it; but it is scarcely credible with what pure intensity this passion burned in him. The quietness of his writing, the irony, the acute wit, the never embarrassed penetration of his insight, the unexcitable strength of his mind, might mislead one into thinking him a man of cool tastes and desires. He was not. His physical qualities and appetites were powerful and fine; for all desirable physical as for all desirable spiritual things he simply hungered and thirsted; it was only his restraint and reserve that deceived. His physical presence itself was powerful and fine; his friends found him enviably handsome, although perhaps I ought to say that admiration never permitted me to think whether he was or was not. Nothing could be quieter than his eye, stiller than his body; at times his passiveness seemed indolent and complete. Yet he was the most restless of men, impatient of confinement, a wanderer who found his main delight in turning homeward, loving motion for its physical activity and for its perpetual freshening of the eye. He would go long distances for short visits, and use incredible care in order to spend an hour with a friend. In his desire of friends, again, the strength of his nature was shown. He had great capacities and great loyalties; the loss of a friend, if it unluckily occurred, through misunderstanding or the mere wryness of another's mind, hurt and oppressed him. Excerpt from Just Muse and Other Poems Then permit me to revel in the wealth of all verse, And forbid me no part of their themes; For the poets have written, their thoughts to disperse, That others might share in their dreams. In words gracefully framed they the topic define, With soft language that ebbs and flows; They bear me away on the bosom of rhyme To the land of Peace and Repose. Perhaps it may be in the majestic lines Of the grand old masters of song; In their heavier themes that my spirit finds Strength, as my tranquil mood they prolong. They hold sweeping power, my mind to immerse, Like the tide that engulfs where it flows; The bear me away on the billows of verse, To the land of Peace and Repose.
