The achievement of students of color continues to be disproportionately low at all levels of education. More than ever, Geneva Gay's foundational book on culturally responsive teaching is essential reading in addressing the needs of today's diverse student population. Combining insights from multicultural education theory and research with real-life classroom stories, Gay demonstrates that all students will perform better on multiple measures of achievement when teaching is filtered through their own cultural experiences. This bestselling text has been extensively revised to include expanded coverage of student ethnic groups: African and Latino Americans as well as Asian and Native Americans as well as new material on culturally diverse communication, addressing common myths about language diversity and the effects of "English Plus" instruction.

To clarify how writing across the curriculum improves learning across the curriculum, this book provides an overview of the current state of writing instruction at the secondary and college levels as it applies to teaching in the content areas. Each chapter contains practical ideas for using writing in the classroom, along with a discussion of the theories on which these ideas are based. In keeping with the hands-on nature of the book, workshop materials are provided at the end of every chapter, including invitations to write journals, workshop exercises, handouts and worksheets, and teacher and student responses to workshop experiences. Chapter topics are arranged in the same order as they might be discussed at an interdisciplinary writing workshop, though each stands as a relatively independent essay.
In 1999, Liping Ma published her book Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics: Teachers' Understanding of Fundamental Mathematics in the United States and China, which probed the kinds of knowledge that elementary school teachers need to convey mathematical concepts and procedures effectively to their students. Later that year, Roger Howe, a member of the U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction (USNC/MI), reviewed the book for the Notices of the American Mathematical Society, concluding that it 'has lessons for all educational policymakers.' Intrigued by the idea of superrank teachers, the USNC/MI sponsored a workshop entitled 'The Teacher Development Continuum in the United States and China'. The purpose of the workshop was to examine the structure of the mathematics teaching profession in the United States and China. The main presentations and discussion from the workshop are summarized in this volume.
This book provides a unique glimpse inside Ernst's sketch journal, in which readers can watch her teach, reflect on her observations, and see descriptions of her students' pictures and writing. Beginning with the understanding that children have stories to tell and to picture, she shows how to link art with reading, writing, and learning in the elementary classroom, takes art into the writers workshop and across the curriculum, and establishes an important partnership with classroom teachers and parents. Readers will discover how to use a picture as a springboard to writing, build a classroom community, form teacher study groups, introduce student sketch journals, take trips to museums, set up classroom and school galleries, establish routines, and organize the classroom studio.
