During August 1988. a group of 67 physicists from 45 laboratories in 17 countries met in Erice for the 26th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented were: Australia. Austria. Canada. China. Czechoslovakia. Denmark. France. Federal Republic of Germany. India. Italy. Poland. Portugal. Spain. Sweden. Switzerland. United Kingdom. and the United States of America. The School was sponsored by the European Physical Society (EPS). the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI). the Sicilian Regional Government (ERS). and the Weizmann Institute of Science. The interest in the Superworld is still very high. This is why. for the third year. the Erice School has been devoted. to a great extent. to review the many developments in Superstring. Supermembranes with their problems of quantization and compactification. All these theoretical speculations are very far from the experimental frontier. In order to keep our feet on the ground. a series of lectures was included to cover the status of CP violation. of the Heavy Leptons. together with the projects for new physics at Gran Sasso and Fermi Lab. For completeness. Julian Schwinger reviewed the great problem of Anomalies in Quantum Field Theory and Shelly Glashow gave a closing lecture on the end of Superworld. If nothing new happens. next year there will be no Superworld in Erice.

This is the 25th anniversary of the School and. for the second time. the programme has been mainly devoted to the Superworld. Needless to say that the Superworld appears to be. at present. very far from the experimental axis. Nevertheless. the Superworld is a fascinating field of modern physics: we ought to know what boils in the heads of our theoretical colleagues. keeping in mind that the source of basic truth is. and will remain. experimental physics. Relevant news in experimental physics was scarce in the past year and the most interesting results have been reported. The future has also been presented with LEP. Gran Sasso. HERA: projects to become operative by 1000; and ELOISATRON as the driving force for Europe to keep a central role in Subnuclear Physics.
The realization that precision LEP data lend support to the idea of supersymmetric grand unification and supersymmetry in general, led to the organization of the First HARC International Workshop on Recent Advances in the SuperWorld. The idea was to have a workshop that discussed all aspects of the supersymmetric world — the SuperWorld as it should be properly known. These aspects are so diverse that they are usually studied by high energy physicists with vastly different interests. The selection of speakers included the whole spectrum in 'energy', from experimental physicists, to specialists in low energy phenomenology, supersymmetric grand unification, supergravity, superstrings and supercosmology.
This invaluable volume is dedicated to the memory of Yuri Golfand, one of the discoverers of supersymmetry. Together with his student, he constructed in 1970 the superextension of the Poincar‚ algebra and obtained the first four-dimensional supersymmetric field theory, a version of supersymmetric QED. Golfand died in 1994 in Israel.Did the pioneers of supersymmetry ? Neveu, Schwarz, Ramond, Golfand, Volkov, Wess, Zumino and others ? foresee in the early 1970's that they would be opening to us the gates of the superworld? A wide range of topics is covered ? from subtle results in the superstring theory to supersymmetry-based phenomenology. Most of the articles have been prepared specifically for this volume.The first part of the book consists of the Editor's essay presenting the basic stages of Golfand's life and work, the memoirs of his widow, Mrs N Koretz-Golfand and of his student, Dr E Likhtman. Also included is the article of Prof. M Marinov ?Revealing the Path to the Superworld?, outlining the main ideas that paved the way to the discovery of supersymmetry. The historical part of the book concludes with the English translation of the Golfand-Likhtman paper on supersymmetry published in 1972 in the Tamm Memorial Volume.
Experience and Possibility concerns the modal ontology of experience. It investigates the detailed metaphysics of the colors, shapes, and other concrete properties present in our experience of ordinary concrete objects, and also of their spatial and temporal relations. It examines their experienced particularity, and the nature of their locations and material bits. This detailed concern with specific cases reveals many inadequacies of traditional ontology. But the central novelty of the book is an intense focus on the modal aspects of such experienced entities, and what it reveals about modality in general. The reality of such things would involve in surprising ways not merely what would hence be actual but also what would be merely possible. This supports a general conception of modality, of the possible and the necessary, according to which the actual and the possible are locally entwined and involve different types of being. The particulars, properties, and relations we experience involve distinctive forms of modal structure, characteristic of specific sorts of universals and irreducible particularities. When this experience is not veridical, when for instance the color we experience is somewhat misleading about reality, it is a puzzle how we have such experience nonetheless. Exploration of these forms of modal structure is groundwork for a new account of how our neurophysiology explains such misleading experience, how our physical structure delivers such qualia. This is sketched for the case of experienced color. Its core idea is that the apparent modal structure of things we experience is sometimes due to the actual modal structure of the neurophysiology that constitutes that experience.
The notion of aesthetic illusion relates to a number of art forms and media. Defined as a pleasurable mental state that emerges during the reception of texts and artefacts, it amounts to the reader's or viewer's sense of having entered the represented world while at the same time keeping a distance from it. Aesthetic Illusion in Literature and the Arts is an in-depth study of the main questions surrounding this experience of art as reality. Beginning with an introduction providing historical background to modern discussions of illusion, it deals with a wide range of theoretical issues. The collection explores the nature and function of the aesthetic illusion as well as the role of affect and emotion, the implications of aesthetic illusion for the theory of fiction, the variable forms of aesthetic illusion and its relationship to other components of aesthetic response. Aesthetic Illusion in Literature and the Arts brings together a team of scholars from philosophy, literature and art and presents an interdisciplinary examination of a concept lying at the heart of contemporary aesthetics.
