Excerpt from Christian Baptism, Its Subjects and Mode Scarcely ever hear the subject from our pulpits. There are hundreds of congrega tions in which the younger members never heard a sermon on Infant Baptism, and prob ably never more than a very hasty explana tion of our practice concerning the mode. The result is that, so far as such communities are educated at all on this subject, it is under other auspices than our own, and by no means friendly to our doctrines. I have thought that something of this character, in expensive and unpretentious, ought to be offered to those who lack time or disposition to study our more critical works; and with this view I send out these Discourses, be lieving they will measurably meet a real want, and contribute toward the removal of the more serious difficulties from the minds of. Excerpt from The Mode and Subjects of Baptism Scarcely twelve months have elapsed since the work was first issued from the press. The first edition was immediately taken up, and a second was so soon called for, that there was no opportunity for any alterations or additions, had any been deemed necessary. Since the publishers have informed me that another edition is now required, I have been led to reconsider the arguments, facts, and considerations of the original work. The writer hopes he is by no means insensible to the defects of the volume. The discussion of various topics treated of might be greatly extended, and new topics of grave importance might be noticed; but the introduction of much new matter would not comport with the design of the work, would increase its cost as Well as its size, and thereby diminish its usefulness as a popular treatise, intended for general circulation. Excerpt from The Subjects and Mode of Baptism The fact that the Church is one, adapted to different condi tions, has a most important bearing on this subject, and unless otherwise stated we are justified in believing that the conditions of membership are the same. The infant was a member before the comingof Jesus. Inasmuch as the apostles regarded the Church of Christ as one with the Church before His coming, they would regard infants as still entitled to the position commanded by God. There is no hint, much less command or authority, for the claim that infant church membership was abolished. The teaching of Jesus and the apostles proceeds on the assumption that they were still to be regarded as members of the Church.
