This report gives the results of a survey on the ownership of ordinary shares in listed UK companies, which sought to analyse how their value was distributed between catagories of owner as of 31/12/03. It was carried out by ONS during 2004 using data downloaded from the CREST settlement system. It was a full-scale survey looking at registers from 198 companies. Further information was obtained from the Stock Exchange yearbook 2004. Findings include [as at 31.12.2003]: an increase in stock market value of 18.5%; institutional shareholders accounted for 48.7% of UK ordinary shares with a value of £666.4 billion; individual holdings amounted to £203.9 billion or 14.9% excluding ownership through mutual funds; rest of the world holders owned 32.3% of ordindary shares (investments of £441.7 billion); and of these rest of the world holdings 36% have their beneficial owner in Europe with North American beneficial holdings at 31%
