Excerpt from The Spanish Royal Tapestries IN point of size, scope and general interest, this little book is perhaps the least considerable of the score of volumes comprised in The Spanish Series, but the collection would have lacked something of the completeness I have endeavoured to secure for it, if the subject of which it treats had not been included. As is inevitable in a series of this kind, many of the books are devoted to aspects and monu ments of Spanish history and achievement, which have served the purpose of writers in all ages, but which could not, on that account, be omitted, while others have an imperative claim to inclusion on the ground that, though of secondary importance, they have never been dealt with elsewhere. The Tapestries which are here reproduced in greater number and variety than has hitherto been attempted are known to students and Connoisseurs the world over, but the measure of that knowledge is limited. Many of the pieces in the possession of the Spanish Crown were acquired by purchase or inheritance, and others were woven in the Nether lands to the command of its Burgundian rulers. Excerpt from Tapestries and Carpets: From the Palace of the Pardo, Woven at the Royal Manfactory of Madrid The Trustees of the Hispanic Society of America take pleasure in presenting a col lection of tapestries and carpets from the Royal Manufactory of Madrid, loaned through the courtesy of His Majesty the King of Spain and sent to this country in charge of the Marquis of Valverde. The larger number of these tapestries, from designs by Francisco Goya and others, had not been removed from the walls of the Royal Palace of the Pardo since their completion from the original cartoons in the I 8th century. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
Excerpt from The Tapestries of the Vienna Imperial Court Works of Brussels of the loth to the 18th century take far the most prominent place in this collection. It is almost entirely lacking however in such Brussels specimens of the end of the 15m, and beginning of the 16th century, in which Gothic tradition still prevails; a splendid array of such are the pride of the Royal Spanish Collection. Next to the Brussels works a number of first-rate Parisian Gobelin series are worthy of mention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Tapestries: Their Origin, History, and Renaissance Among those to whom I am especially indebted for assistance in the preparation of this book are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and its President, Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan, whose gifts and loans have done so much to make the Museum the centre of tapestry interest on this side of the Atlantic.
