Excerpt from The Spanish Pastoral Romances The first edition of this work was accepted by the faculty of the University of Freiburg i. B. as a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1891, and was published in Baltimore in the following year. In its day it was not unfavorably received, and as it has long since been out of print, it has seemed that a new edition might not be unwelcome. In the long period that has intervened the Pastoral Romance never entirely lost for me its old attraction, and as I gradually acquired many of the early editions of these works and re-read them, I determined to re-issue these "primicias de mi corto ingenio," adding such new facts as subsequent researches had brought to light. The result is the present work, which has been almost entirely rewritten, and now appears, as I hope, in a much improved form. I have not seen fit to change, in any material degree, the opinions originally expressed concerning the various romances; repeated reading has convinced me more than ever that the Diana of Montemayor, which was the first, is also the best of these pastorals, while it has increased my admiration for the poetical portions of the Arcadia of Lope de Vega. The Pastoral Romance was essayed by some of the greatest ingenios that Spain has produced, and while many of these poets "had no true vocation for the business," as Professor Fitzmaurice-Kelly says of Cervantes, and, as a consequence, their works are of widely varying degrees of merit, yet they cannot be entirely neglected by the student, for the pastoral is a product of the most flourishing period of Spanish literature, - a literature unsurpassed by any in the modern world. From Theocritus’ Idylls to James Cameron’s Avatar, Arcadia remains an enduring presence in world culture and a persistent source of creative inspiration. Why does Arcadia still exercise such a powerful pull on the imagination? This book responds by arguing that in sixteenth-century Europe, a dramatic shift took place in imagining Arcadia. The traditional visions of Arcadia collided and fused with romance, the new experimental form of prose fiction, producing a hybrid, dynamic world of change and transformation. Emphasizing matters of fictional function and world-making over generic classification, Imagining Arcadia in Renaissance Romance analyzes the role of romance as a catalyst in remaking Arcadia in five, canonical sixteenth-century texts: Sannazaro’s Arcadia; Montemayor’s La Diana; Cervantes’ La Galatea; Sidney’s Arcadia; and Lope de Vega’s Arcadia. Collins’ analyses of the re-imagined Arcadia in these works elucidate the interplay between timely incursions into the fictional world and the timelessness of art, highlighting issues of freedom, identity formation, subjectivity and self-fashioning, the intersection of public and private activity, and the fascination with mortality. This book addresses the under-representation of Spanish literature in Early Modern literary histories, especially regarding the rich Spanish contribution to the pastoral and to idealizing fiction in the West. In the spring of 1623 Charles, Prince of Wales, the young heir to the English and Scottish thrones donned a false wig and beard and slipped out of England under the assumed name of John Smith in order to journey to Madrid and secure for himself the hand of the King of Spain's daughter. His father James I and VI had been toying with the idea of a Spanish match for his son since as early as 1605, despite the profoundly divisive ramifications such a policy would have in the face of the determined 'Puritan' opposition in parliament, committed to combatting the forces of international Catholicism at every opportunity. With the Spanish ambassador, the machiavellian Count of Gondomar's encouragement to 'mount' Spain, Charles impetuously took matters into his own hands and as the negotiations stalled he departed secretly in the guise of Mr Smith to win with his romantic and foolhardy daring what his father could not achieve through diplomacy. The eventual failure and public humiliation that followed his journey to Madrid has been cited as a major influence on Charles's subsequent development and policies as king. Until now, there has been no attempt to systematically explore the failure of the Spanish match from an interdisciplinary perspective, including what it reveals about the practice of diplomacy, the taste, art, and dress of the period, its literature and the long-term consequences for Anglo-Spanish relations. In this volume leading scholars from a variety of disciplines analyse the reactions and representations of Charles's romantic escapade and offer their insights into the affair. In doing so many traditional assumptions about the trip are overturned. By taking into account the political, social, religious and international dimensions of the event, and examining historical, literary and artistic evidence, this volume paints a rounded, lively and vivid portrait of one of the most remarkable episodes of the Jacobean age.
