Excerpt from The Soul of the Bishop, Vol. 1 of 2: A Novel; In Two Volumes In presenting "The Soul of the Bishop" to the world, I feel that it is necessary for me to make some explanation to my readers as to the reason which has made me choose this unlikely theme as the motive of this story. I use the word "unlikely" advisedly, because I am aware that I have the reputation of being a writer of light stories, of pretty trifles pour passer le temps - which is one of the disadvantages of beginning to write novels while very young, as it often creates a difficulty in more mature years when the author wishes to be taken seriously, feeling strongly that, the work has grown in quality or in strength with the years that have gone by. "The Soul of the Bishop" has been on my mind for more than two years, and I now offer it to the world with much diffidence, being not very sure whether I have made out a good case or not. But if my readers see what my aim has been, that it has been to present with unmistakable force an attitude of mind which is very prevalent to-day, then I shall not feel that I have thrown my work away.
