Excerpt from The Skeptical Era in Modern History, or the Infidelity of the Eighteenth Century, the Product of Spiritual Despotism In pursuance of this aim, I have first attempted to exhibit the fact we are to explain - tha nature and extent of that strange defection of faith that marked the eighteenth cen tury. We, then, consider its causes and first those which are secondary and occasional; such as e. G., the low and relaxed moral tone of the world's mind at the time the epidemic of unbelief set iu - the century and a half of reli gious agonism and arms which preceded the revolution in philosophy inaugurated by Bacon and Des Cartes in physics and metaphysics, and by Luther in the realm of religion and the rise of the idea of wealth to the ascendancy in cabinets of governments, and in general society. Our view is then directed to the Fan: et origo malomm, the great owes or aware of the evil we investigate; viz despotism, despotism both secular and spiritual, but with capacial and portentous preeminence of the latter. Our investigation then, brings us to the geographic focus and centre of the plague z - France. Its position in European civilization its civil and ecclesiastical constitution and history - its court, monarchy, church, literature - these are seen through the malign influence of spiritual despotism, directed to the subversion of belief and finally resulting in the organiza tion of a conspiracy and crusade against the faith of the world. In the early 1980s the late Charles B. Schmitt and I discussed the fact that so much new research and new interpretations were taking place concerning various areas of modem skepticism that we, as pioneers, ought to organize a conference where these new findings and outlooks could be presented and discussed. Charles and I had both visited the great library at Wolfenbiittel, and were most happy when the Herzog August Bibliothek agreed to host the first conference on the history of skepticism, in 1984 (published as Skepticism from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, ed. R. H. Popkin and Charles B. Schmitt [Wiesbaden, 1987, Wolfenbiitteler For schungen, vol. 35]) Charles and I projected a series of later conferences, the first of which would deal with skepticism and irreligion in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Unfortunately, however, Charles died suddenly in 1986, while lecturing in Padua. Subsequent to his death Constance Blackwell, his companion of many years, established the Foundation for Intellectual History to support research and publica tion on topics in the history of ideas that continued Schmitt's interests. One of the first ventures was to arrange and fund the already planned conference on skepticism and irreligion in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. After many difficulties and problems, the conference was sponsored and funded by the Foundation for Intel lectual History, one of its first public activities. It was held at the lovely facilities of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies in Wassenaar in 1990.
This book aims at beginning the rewriting of the history of skepticism by highlightening the medieval sources of the modern skeptical discussions. It shows through seven newly written essays how epistemological and external-world skepticism was developed and discussed particularly in the fourteenth century up to sixteenth century Paris.
The history of skepticism usually ignores the Middle Ages. It is customary in most historical overviews to say that epistemological skepticism and external-world skepticism did not find its way into the Western philosophical tradition until Sextus Empiricus was rediscovered and retranslated into Latin in the Sixteenth century. It is the aim of this book to show that this is not true and that the history of skepticism must be rewritten. It is only once the rich discussions of both epistemological and external-world skepticism in the Middle Ages are included that the whole history of skepticism can be written, and only then can the development of modern thought be understood. This book begins this rewriting of the history of skepticism by tracing discussions of skepticism from Al-Ghazali to sixteenth century Paris.
