Excerpt from The Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 26: February 1929 It has been said that one of the characteristic traits of Americans is a fondness for firsts. Such a fond' ness will undoubtedly receive a lasting joy from the priorities of William and Marv, for this college was the first royal college in America; there was founded there the first Greek' letter fraternity in America - Phi Beta Kappa Society, founded in 1776; she was the first to inaugurate the elective system of studies, 1779; the first college to have an honor system, 1779; the first American college to establish a school of law, 1779; a school of modern languages, 1779; a school of political economy, 1784; and a school of history, 1803. Being a fellow Of high ideals, clean, Open and above board in his daily life, he came to be looked upon as one Of the leaders in all that was best in college life. Having played at tackle, halfback and quarterback as well as a coach of considerable experience his selec' tion will speak with authority. Excerpt from The Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 4: December 25, 1906 In 1875 the first fraternity was organized at Purdue, it being Sigma Chi, which was not recognized at this time. Its endeavor to become recognized by the faculty led to very extensive litigation, which, as it is often misunderstood, may be of some interest to Sigma Phi Epsilon. This is known as the Purdue Case. Excerpt from The Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 3: December 25, 1905 The journal, however. Appeals to every member, actiye or Alumnus. To contribute to its support, and every one of them with a spark of fraternal feeling, would do so. But in return for the support of the Alumni. Why does not the journal devote some space to items about the doing of the Alumni? The editor very creditably gets after the Chapters who are delinquent with their letters, and chastises them with the big stick, but after all, the Chapter letter is of precious little interest to the Alumnus who may have left the college acouple of years or so ago, when he reads that the Chapter he was once connected with, has pledged two new men, elected one of their brothers on the football team. Or that another won the prize for the best essay. And so on; still he is expected to loyally support the paper. The jour nal would be doubly interesting to me, as one of its sub scribers, if I read in its pages, an occasional item about the brothers Who graduated with me; also the brothers Who have graduated from time to time. Since then, Why should they be relegated to utter oblivion just the moment they are no longer actual members Of any particular Chapter?
