Excerpt from The Secret Bequest Paulists in New York, lending a shadowy remote ness to the lofty roof and pillared aisles, while bringing out with exquisite effect the radiance Of the ever burning light within the sanctuary, which brightened in steadfast glow as the Obscurity deepened. Here and there throughout the church a few devout wor shippers were kneeling; but it is doubtful if to any one of them the spell Of the place and the hour appealed with a deeper sense Of its spiritual and poetic charm than to a girl who sat quietly in one of the seats near the door. Excerpt from The Secret of the Clan Aunt Tabitha had laughed, when she read this about her name; but it had made me cry. If she was going to change her name, it didn't seem as if she would be Aunt Tabitha at all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Franks Bequest, Vol. 1: Catalogue of British and American Book Plates Bequeathed to the Trustees of the British Museum Sir Wollaston Franks in the first instance took up the collecting of book plates as a sort of light supplement to his other and graver antiquarian labours. The pursuit had the further advantage that it was one relatively inexpensive compared with other kinds of collecting to which he was devoted. The very high prices commanded, for instance, by fine mediseval works of art and curiosity rendered it difficult for a collector of his comparatively moderate, although comfortable, means to compete for them in the open market on any but rare occasions. But of book plates, as his interest in them grew, he could look forward to forming a really comprehensive and all but complete collection; and from the side of heraldry, genealogy, and family history, on which subjects he was an authority of the first rank, the study very strongly appealed to him. Other amateurs, as Dr. Joseph Jackson Howard, Maltravers Herald Extraordinary, the Hon. Gerald Ponsonby, and the Hon. Leicester Warren, afterwards Lord de Tabley, had begun collecting book plates in England earlier than Sir Wollaston. But when he had once taken up the pursuit, he carried it on with charac teristic energy, and before the end had outstripped practically all competitors. The nucleus of his collection was a small volume which passed into his hands from those of his old friend Mr. C. V. Bailey, one of a coterie of collectors and amateurs in England which included such men as Mr. W. Tw0peny, Mr. Albert Way, the Marchese d'azeglio, John Henderson, and Felix Slade. His interest in heraldry and English history had made him pay a certain amount of attention to this volume from the first; but he seems never to have regarded it as having any Special value until about the year 1878, when the Hon Leicester Warren borrowed it for use in the compilation of his Guide to the Study of Book Plates. This gentleman was a friend of old standing, with whom Sir Wollaston shared many tastes and pursuits. The fresh interest aroused on this occasion led Sir Wollaston to throw into this new study the same enthusiasm and concentration of purpose which made the secret of his success in other fields. Ian Thomas is beloved around the world as the singer/songwriter of such smash hits as 'Painted Ladies', 'Hold On', and 'Right Before Your Eyes'. Now the creative force that gave us so many classic hit songs has turned to novel writing -- and what a novel: 'Bequest' tells the story of a Canadian-American university professor beset with visions of dire things past, present and future; of death and tragedy and dark secrets hidden in the American countryside. Filled with touches of humour and personal observations on the human condition, 'Bequest' also features a ruthless waste management firm that finds toxic garbage is gold and no amount of environmental damage or loss of life is too high a price to pay for massive profits. Thomas breathes life into his characters and keeps our heart rates soaring as he skilfully takes the plot through unexpected twists and turns and masterfully builds tension to the breaking point.
A “perfectly executed suspense tale very much in the mode of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca” (The Washington Post) from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, The Lying Game, and The Turn of the Key. On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money. Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased…where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, this is a “captivating and eerie page-turner” (The Wall Street Journal) from the Agatha Christie of our time.
