Excerpt from The Rivers and Lakes of Scripture WE can scarcely even glance at the Bible without perceiving how many of its beauties, of its lessons, and its joys, are associated with its streams. In every land, rivers are connected with fertility and loveliness - With rich verdure - with pleasant villages and happy homes But in the East all this is felt in a far higher degree than in the West. Even a little brook, or a trickling fountain, may there be deemed a rich inheritance, and battles have been fought, and lives have been sacrificed, to retain or secure such possessions - in a word, a well, a brook, or a river, is prized by the Orientals beyond what the western nations can easily understand. The Ganges, the Nile, the Jordan, and other rivers, have actually been worshipped as gods. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sacred Streams: Or the Ancient and Modern History of the Rivers of the Bible How great must have been the joy and comfort which the ancient people of God took in their rills and brooks wherewith their thirst was quenched, and by which fertility was given to the beautiful and goodly land, that land of brooks of water, of hills and valleys, which Jehovah had given them, and from which so many sweet images and allusions were drawn, turning their thoughts to earthly and heavenly blessings, and to their gracious and loving God! Excerpt from Sacred Streams: Or the Ancient and Modern History of the Rivers of the Bible There is no little theology, as well as history, abiding by the sacred rivers; whoever will trace them with care may be a very learned man; and he who will drink of them, whenever he can, will be a man of life, as well as learning. The first river went out of Eden; it was the river of Paradise, lost now, and as untraceable as the entrance to the garden. The last river brings us to God and the New Jerusalem; it is the pure river of the water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb. But the first river, like the first man, was of the earth earthy; the last river, like the second man, is the Lord from heaven. But there is an intermediate river, the foretaste of the last, as the earnest of the Spirit is the foretaste of the heavenly inheritance. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of our God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High. Divine Truth and Grace constitute that river for the healing of the nations. That was Ezekiel's vision of the holy waters, issuing from the Sanctuary. Excerpt from The Holy Land and the Bible, Vol. 1 of 2: A Book of Scripture Illustrations Gathered in Palestine I visited Palestine with the intention of gathering illustra tions of the sacred writings from its hills and valleys, its rivers and lakes, its plains and uplands, its plants and animals, its skies, its soil, and, above all, from the pictures of ancient times still presented on every side in the daily life of its people. Nothing is more instructive or can be more charming, when reading Scripture, than the illumination of its texts from such sources, throwing light upon its constantly recurring Oriental imagery and local allusions, and revealing the exact meaning of words and phrases which otherwise could not be adequately understood. Its simple narratives, its divine poetry, its pro phetic Visions, its varied teachings, alike catch additional vivid ness and force when read with the aid of such knowledge. The Land is, in fact, a natural commentary on the sacred writ ings which it has given to us, and we study them as it were amidst the life, the scenery, and the local peculiarities which surrounded those to whom the Scriptures were first addressed. Excerpt from Peter Parley's Book of Bible Stories: For Children and Youth; With Engravings IN this. Little volume I propose to tell you some of the stories which are found in the Bible. This book consists of two parts, - the Old Testament, and the New Testament. The Old Testament tells us how God made this great round world upon which we live, with its mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes and seas. It tells us how He covered the land with trees and plants, and four-footed beasts; how He filled the air with birds and insects, and the waters with fishes of a thousand forms.
