Ricky Nelson (he later preferred "Rick") was 8 years old when he began his career in show business. After a successful run on radio, his family's situation comedy The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet enjoyed a 14 year television tenure. On the April 10, 1957, episode, "Ricky the Drummer," Nelson started his singing career by lip syncing to Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin'." He scored 36 Top 40 singles between 1957 and 1972 and ranked number 5 in Billboard's Top 25 Artists of the Decade 1950-1959. As a country rock pioneer, Rick Nelson influenced Buffalo Springfield, Linda Ronstadt, and the Eagles. This book is a candid account of his life in rock and roll through stories told by musicians and producers on the road and in the studio with him. Actors and family members also provided invaluable memories and insights.

Whether theyre acoustic or electric; a Fender, Gibson, or Rickenbacker; whether theyre used to play rock or blues or country; guitars have revolutionized the music industry and have struck a chord with music fans everywhere. An anthology of memoirs, stories, and reminiscences about acoustic and electric guitars and their vital role in all styles of music, This Old Guitar is the supreme tribute to this popular instrument and pop culture icon. The stories in "This Old Guitar" cover such themes as first guitars, learning to play, guitar love and lust, oddball guitars, famous guitars that made (or didnt make) history, playing air guitar, the cliches of smashing and burning guitars, and more. The stories come from journalists and historians well-known in the music industry, including Dan Forte (former editor of Guitar Player and Guitar World magazines), Michael Wright (author of "Guitar Stories" vols. 1 and 2, and contributor to "Vintage Guitar" magazine), Ward Meeker (editor of "Vintage Guitar" magazine), and Charles Shaar Murray (Author of "Crosstown Traffic and Boogie Man"). Sidebars include quotes from such famous musicians as Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker, B. B. King, Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix, and more.
In this lively collection of interviews, storied music writer Jas Obrecht presents a celebration of the world's most popular instrument as seen through the words, lives, and artistry of some of its most beloved players. Readers will read--and hear--accounts of the first guitarists on record, pioneering bluesmen, gospel greats, jazz innovators, country pickers, rocking rebels, psychedelic shape-shifters, singer-songwriters, and other movers and shakers. In their own words, these guitar players reveal how they found their inspirations, mastered their instruments, crafted classic songs, and created enduring solos. Highlights include Nick Lucas's recollections of waxing the first noteworthy guitar records; Ry Cooder's exploration of prewar blues musicians; Carole Kaye and Ricky Nelson on the early years of rock and roll; Stevie Ray Vaughan on Jimi Hendrix; Gregg Allman on his brother, Duane Allman; Carlos Santana, Eric Johnson, and Pops Staples on spirituality in music; Jerry Garcia, Neil Young, and Tom Petty on songwriting and creativity; and early interviews with Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani, and Ben Harper.
This electric blues guitar approach to playing roots music dives deep into gear, right and left-hand technique, and advanced soloing and rhythm accompaniment concepts, including “partial” chords that can be used creatively while a bass guitarist supplies the missing primary chord tones. The author provides unique insights on harmonically intense chord voicings as well as a fresh look at phrasing and thematic soloing ideas. A pragmatic approach to comping includes custom-built voicings for blues and roots styles, a section dedicated to Freddie Green chord forms, 12-bar maps with various turnarounds, and an introduction to the concept of layered rhythm parts. The section on soloing delves into applying chord tones for more expansive ideas; it contains fretboard charts illustrating pentatonic scales, the blues scale and the Mixolydian mode and suggests opportunities for tension and release by applying diminished and altered dominant subterfuge. The book’s excellent play-along guitar, bass and drums companion recordings in jump and funk blues, rockabilly, Latin, and Cajun styles will be useful not only as rhythm guitar examples and backup tracks for lead playing, but also for songwriters who want something more than a metronome or drum track for lyric inspiration and phrasing accuracy. Musical examples are shown in standard notation and tab, extended fretboard diagrams plus the Nashville numbering system, making it easy to play chord backup in any key like a pro.
