Excerpt from The Republics of Central, and South America, Their Resources, Industries, Sociology and Future The purpose of this book is to provide, within the compass of a single volume, a succinct study of the Latin American republics, and their social and physical conditions; which, whilst affording exact, and, to a considerable extent, detailed information, is at the same time of interest to the general reader. There are many books of travel and description dealing with these lands, but none perhaps affording a review such as is aimed at in the present work. Furthermore, the sociology of the Latin American communities, which is dealt with here, has been much neglected, and is little understood by the general reader. The most important science at the present time, perhaps, is that still undeveloped one which may be termed "human geography": the economic relation of the people of a land to their environment, and of their rights as concern the natural resources around them. It is this science, the author ventures to affirm, which will determine the future equilibrium of society. The advantages which the Latin American countries offer to the trading, investing, and emigrating peoples of the world are set forth side by side with this element, together with their various attractions and peculiar interests in other fields.
