In every decade, deeds are committed in dark places that are unknown to those who tread lifes well-lit paths. Even so, as a new era dawns in Toronto of the 1950s, no one suspects that a serial killer is about to unleash a fury on the quiet residential avenues and in the forested river valleys. On Labour Day weekend in 1951, just as thirteen-year-old Tom Hudson is ready to begin high school, a sadistic killer strikes. A female member of the schools staff is brutally murdered in the secluded darkness of the Humber Valley, and the police suspect another teacher has committed the crime. After detectives Gerry Thomson and Jim Peersen are assigned to the case, another innocent victim is murdered. As the investigation heats up, Tom and his friends attempt to go about their normal livesdeveloping as teenagers dobut it is not long before they become unwittingly caught up with the mystery behind the brutal killings. As the killers rage intensifies, everyone fears another murder lies in the shadows. Now it is up to two detectives and a group of curious teenagers to find a psychopath hell-bent on seeking revengebefore further violence occurs.
On the face of it, Katrina Devonside has everything that a young and beautiful girl should want. The daughter of immensely wealthy parents and soon to inherit a fortune of her own, she appears to have the world at her feet. But there is one thing missing in her life. Although nearly twenty-one, she is still a virgin. Constantly regaled by her college friends concerning their many and lascivious sexual adventures, her frustrations are increasing by the day. Fascinated by their tales of bizarre and extreme encounters, she vows to outdo them all before her birthday.
Connie Winston, a shy, studious twenty-year-old college sophomore, finds herself at a frat party one night-and ends up losing her virginity, not entirely willingly, to an eager and charming young man, Lance Benson. Connie is torn by conflicting emotions as she undergoes multiple sessions with Lance, whose skills in this area are impressive. What follows is a sexual odyssey in which Connie discovers the multifarious ways in which sexual pleasure can be experienced. All the people closest to her-her eighteen-year-old sister, Elise; her divorced parents, Maggie and Stephen; Lance's divorced parents, Manfred and Crystal-find that their own sexual awakening gives them a healthier, more wholesome outlook on life. This novel demonstrates how the diverse forms of sexual union can bring people closer together and touch our deepest emotions.
When twenty-year old Noelle Gregg sets out from small-town America to begin her junior year of college abroad, she is only marginally aware of just how limited her views of the world really are. Thrown together with two wacky and only slightly more enlightened roommates, Noelle slowly begins to progress from a naive, self-righteous girl into a tolerant and cultivated young woman. As the girls--Steph, Cara, and Noelle--romp together through Europe and life, the three of them share every experience from chancy hitchhiking escapades to being "escorted" out of a vineyard where they are caught sampling grapes. When Steph and Noelle become obsessed with the notion of kissing a pair of Frenchmen while in Paris, they discover that not every romantic interest is who he might appear. Throughout the book Noelle finds herself perpetually lost in major cities of the world, occasionally ending up in some very questionable locales. More memorable perhaps, than Noelle's jumbled adventures on a new continent, is her struggle to evolve both carnally and intellectually. Over a series of brief but intense romances, Noelle surrenders her heart to a number of captivating young Europeans. Relinquishing her virginity, however, is another matter. As the roommates reunite nearly three decades later to discover that Cara is fighting a deadly battle with cancer, fresh perspectives and fond memories intermittently contribute to the story's poignant themes. Ultimately, The Reluctant Virgin is a tale of youthful infatuation, enduring friendship, and a young woman's attempt to define herself.
Will A Sham Marriage. . . Young Cecilia Marchmont is appalled at her father's announcement that he's gambled away her hand in marriage to the son of a wealthy friend. Ormiston Ducre was furious at his father for forcing him to wed Marchmont's chubby daughter. It was a clear case of blackmail: marry Cecilia, or forfeit his trip to Europe. But at a masked ball in Paris, he meets the most enchanting and mysterious woman he's ever known. This is a lady with whom he could spend his life. But first, he must learn her true identity. . .
The Displacement of the Body in Ælfric's Virgin Martyr Lives addresses 10th-century Old English hagiographical translations, from Latin source material, by the abbot and grammarian Ælfric. The vitae of Agnes, Agatha, Lucy, and Eugenia, and the married saints Daria, Basilissa, and Cecilia, included in Ælfric's s Old English Lives of Saints, recount the lives, persecution, and martyrdom of young women who renounce sex and, in the first four stories, marriage, to devote their lives to Christian service. They purport to be about the primacy of virginity and the role of the body in attaining sanctity. However, a comparison of the Latin sources with Ælfric's versions suggests that his translation style, characterized by simplifying the most important meanings of the text, omits certain words or entire episodes that foreground suppressed female sexuality as key to sainthood. The Old English Lives de-emphasize the physical nature of faith and highlight the importance of spiritual purity. In this volume, Alison Gulley explores how the context of the Benedictine Reform in late Anglo-Saxon England and Ælfric's commitment to writing for a lay audience resulted in a set of stories depicting a spirituality distinct from physical intactness.
