Excerpt from The Railroad Engineer's Practice: Being a Short but Complete Description of the Duties of the Young Engineer in Preliminary and Location Surveys and in Construction In the first edition of this book many typographical errors oc curred, which Were a source of great mortification to the author, as they were, of course, due to a want of sufficient care on his part in the proof-reading. He was not before aware of the great difficulty of insuring absolute accuracy. N 0w, however, he believes he has secured a perfect text, not only in the old portions of the book, but likewise in the numerous additions that have been made. He begs to thank those engineers who have, by their demand for the first edition, caused this second one to appear. Several have made valuable suggestions to him, either in regard to What had been previously left out, or in the simplification of formulae, which are gratefully acknowledged.
