This was a period of great change in the railroad industry, with mergers of large railroads and creation of regional and short line railroads to operate unwanted lines of the Class One railroads. These books will cover this period in photographs taken by the author. Passenger trains is the topic in this second series of books of The Railfan Chronicles and Book 1 is about Amtrak in Southeastern Michigan from 1974 to 2000.

This is Book 4 of our coverage of this unique Michigan railroad, looking at its Holly Subdivision between the years 1975 and 2000. Book 4 covers the mainline action on GTW's in the Holly Subdivision starting in 1975 when GTW was still an independent railroad, after its merger with the Detroit & Toledo Shore Line Railroad and the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad in the early 1980's, through when GTW itself was being absorbed by its parent, Canadian National Railways, starting in 1992.

Not only did D&M travel through beautiful and sometimes harsh countryside on its two routes from Bay City to the tip of Michigan's lower peninsula, but its locomotive roster consisted entirely of rare ALCO locomotives during this time frame. Both its original route that followed the Lake Huron shoreline and its newer, former Penn Central, route that ran up the middle of the State are covered in photographs taken by the author during his many trainwatching trips on the D&M.

Its northern end was abandoned and the Lake Michigan Carferry operations stopped. The evolution of the Ann Arbor Railroad during this period is shown in both color and black and white photographs.

The Chronicles of a Detroit Railfan series of books brings back to life the many fascinating railroads serving a great city in the last quarter of the 20th Century when they were still so very interesting and so many.Detroit Terminal Railroad was a shortline, “terminal” railroad that formed a semicircle around the City of Detroit serving Detroit's industries. Formed in 1905 to extend rail service to the then rural area north of Detroit, the City of Detroit and its industries grew out to it, making Detroit Terminal a very busy and prosperous railroad until the deindustrialization of Detroit starting in the 1960's. Volume 3 of Chronicles of a Detroit Railfan chronicles the last days of the Detroit Terminal Railroad in 1981 before it was merged into Conrail, as witnessed and photographed by the author.
